The first event log (vss 6013 at 06:53) was happening prior to this issue.

It doesn't change when I attempt to backup the data or system state to
either a USB Drive, or an internal drive.

This happens for System State and the data backup, exchange works OK.
I have performed the following:
cd /d %windir%\system32
Net stop vss
Net stop swprv
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll
rebooted server and the error persists.
I have additionally registered sqlvdi.dll, rebooted and the error persists.

I have seen a few VSS hotfixes, but they all appear to apply to SP0 or
SP1 installs.

Any ideas?

Steve

Re: Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0x80042319.

First get 2 more GB of Ram
Go into Drive Properties
Delete the Current Shadow Copies there.
Recreate them
and then run a backup to see if it works.

Yes more ram would be nice, but need to convince the business owners.

Removed all previous shadow copies, recreated, and I'm running a system
state backup now and all appears to be working OK. I won't get an
opportunity to perform a full backup until tonight, however so far it
looks very promising.

I'll let you know how I go, thank you very much for the advice.

Re: Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0x80042319.

I just picked up 4GB of ECC RAM for A Dell PE1800
for 60 bucks so money shouldn't be that big of deal

However you can run under 2GB
(But it's tight and impossible of you have WSUS 3.0 and WSS 3.0 on the
server)

Check how much they are using if over 2GB
that means you are CACHING RAM and over working your HD's and Server
(So either tweak the SQL Mem lower)
and if you can't do that.
Then there is your justification for More memory.

Memory is Cheap now so it's an easy sell

ON the Shadow copy error
I hope what I said works.

I don't run Shadow Copies on the OS drive and the Partition that has
Exchange
Only the partition that has DATA like users.

Shadow copies are only on the data drive, exchange and system drives are
left pretty much alone. As for the RAM, well my boss will talk to their
boss...

Backups working beautifully now, once again, thank you very much for
your assistance.

Re: Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0x80042319.

Don't get me wrong
you CAN run under 2GB
If you don't have WSUS 3.0
or WSS 3.0
or SQL on the server.
And You've Tamed SQL Memory usage.

However Check how much you are currently using
if you are up to date on stuff like that
my guess is that you are OVER 2GB usage and caching memory to the HD Big
time.
This slows the server and causes Excessive R/W on the HD's

Glad the backups are working again.
