SBS Configuration/Setup Wizard clears configurations?

I desperately need some advice please.

After installing SBS 2003 using HP SmartStart CD - assisted installation, it appeared installation was complete. I was unaware that the SBS Setup/Configuration Wizard needs to be run thereafter while I have already manually created a new domain, migrated 30 users to it, installed programs, SQL, ERP etc.

After getting CAL limit warnings, I realised 'Server Management' console was not installed - because I had not run the above wizard. I'm unable to install CALs, and may possibly face other problems without the Server Management console.

If I run the wizard now, does it affect the current domain, users, software/ERP etc?

Basically - does this setup wizard clear existing existing configurations? Since I cannot have another DC with SBS, it will cause great downtime reinstalling everything afresh.

any assistance is highly appreciated.

Re: SBS Configuration/Setup Wizard clears configurations?

SBS03 setup is nondestructive, it will basically SBSise the existing system.
You have some cleanup to do (like putting machines/users into the right
GPO's).

Where do people get this funny idea about 'I cannot have another DC with
SBS', it's a complete fallacy.

Me, I'd probably flatten it and start again. You have already found out why
most people familiar with SBS suggest to perform a couple of installs before
commiting to a live system. There's probably a couple of other things that
could be planned better once you are familiar with install.

Re: SBS Configuration/Setup Wizard clears configurations?

Thanks SuperGumpy!

To be honest, the only existing domain controller became corrupt [ntdsutil was unable to repair database] after disk errors, hence my very first SBS installation had to be live! I would ideally have liked to test it first.

As for multiple DCs in SBS - I'd read it on 2-3 different Internet posts that SBS Domains are standalone & cannot have more than 1 DC. Once again I haven't read on this from Microsoft, so I need more 'official research.

Still appreciate more experiences from others who've encountered this.

Re: SBS Configuration/Setup Wizard clears configurations?

As SG says you can have multiple DCs in a SBS domain, but of course only 1
SBS. You haven't researched very much if all you did was search and find a
couple of posts from unknowledgeable people. Its stated in the SBS FAQs and
certainly in other Microsoft documentation.

Re: SBS Configuration/Setup Wizard clears configurations?

Re: additional domain controllers. Don't beat yourself up over it, it is
just about the most common misconception concerning SBS.

Concerning the rest. If you have basic functionality and can pause before
making further change to the production network NOW would be a good time to
grab a spare box (or a copy of Virtual PC) and do a couple of practice
installs, with the intent of blowing away this 'semi-done' install and
redoing it.

It's entirely possible you can move from this semi-done job to a proper
setup but my fear is that lack of familiarity with SBS may leave you in an
indeterminate state.

Re: SBS Configuration/Setup Wizard clears configurations?

Thank you all for the contributions. I'm currently going thru the links stated and White Papers from Microsoft site. Also installed SBS for a test environment to see what will happen if I run the 'initial' configuration wizard later on. Unfortunately I don't have SQL, ERP software to see the impact on those, but I will know impact on domain, user accounts etc.

After my test run, I'll revert back.

Re: SBS Configuration/Setup Wizard clears configurations?

Hi,

Did the installation of sbs software change your server settings or other things? Cause your question/problem is exactly the same thing what happend to me.
Installed everything and migrated the server, but now I need the sbs software without changing the server settings etc.

Hope you can tell me how things went,

greetings,
Bart

Re: SBS Configuration/Setup Wizard clears configurations?

Creamers:

I recommend you start a new thread and explain your issue from the beginning
with a "how to" or "where do I go from here" kind of question. I can't
follow your post forward and backwards to reply to you while reading the
other posts, and I doubt that many others will go back in time via the way
back machine to try to figure this out.

We are happy to help, but if you can't follow/understand the help already
given, please start a new thread with your own set of questions, but be sure
you have tried the assistance already offered to the original thread and
searched this group and the web for a solution before you do start a new
thread.
