| SBS 2008 unable to receive email messages
Greetings, I just completed a migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008. Only two configuration items changed from the SBS 2003 installation: the SBS computer name and the internal I.P. address of the SBS 2008 box. Immediately after successful completion of the migration, AD, user accounts, mailbox migration, at 15:00 on 3/5/09, the messages began arriving at my mailbox. No email messages have arrived since that one time. I can send messages with no problems from both the Outlook client and by using OWA. I can receive RSS feed messages from MSNBC News. The SSL certificate warning appears when I access both Outlook from the LAN workstation and OWA from the LAN workstation. My research revealed several other individuals are experiencing similar issues but the responses to them were mainly more questions. So far I have updated and rebooted the SBS08 box, verified the presence of the correct SBS08 DNS entries and absence of any SBS03 entries. I have the following entry in the EMC: EMC/Server Configuration/Hub Transport/Receive Connector/Windows SBS Internet Receive 'ServerName'/Remote IP Address(es)/ _external IP address of the mail.domain.com server_. When I also added the actual I.P. addresses of the four Postini spam filter servers, there was continued absence of email, i.e. no change. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have purchased an SSL certificate from GoDaddy but have not yet installed it. Paul |

| RE: SBS 2008 unable to receive email messages Hi Paul, Thank you for your post. As I understand it, the issue is: After a successful migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 with AD, user accounts, mailbox migration, there is no inbound mail flow from that time. You can only send message and receive RSS feed messages from MSNBC News but no mails arrived to your SBS server. You have updated and rebooted the SBS server and verified DNS entries. You purchased an SSL certificate from GoDaddy but have not yet installed it. If I have misunderstood your concerns please feel free to let me know. Before we go further, I would like to confirm with you about the current situations: 1. Do you mean after 3/5/09 on emails are received for all users? 2. Do you mean user cannot even receive internal mails from other domain users? 3. Have you run the "Connect to the Internet Wizard" and can you send mail to external domains normally now? By default, after a successful setup/migration, Exchange will be configured in way where internal e-mail flow will be operational. In order to configure Exchange to properly host Internet e-mail, the Internet Address Management Wizard will have to be completed, even the manual configuration option will configure Exchange to host the selected domain name. Therefore, at this time, I suggest we try to re-run the Internet Address Management Wizard again to configure Exchange settings first including Send Connector, Receive Connector, Accepted domains and Email Address Policy etc. 1. Open the Windows SBS Console. 2. On the navigation bar, click Home. 3. In Getting Started, click Set up your Internet Address. The Internet Address Management Wizard appears. 4. Follow the instructions in the wizard to do following: a.Choose to purchase a new domain name or use an existing domain name. b.Choose whether you want the server to manage the domain name or whether you will manage the domain name yourself. c. Specify a domain name that you want to use or purchase. d. Use the Advanced settings option to designate a prefix to use with your domain name, for example; remote.contoso.com. 5. Depending on the choices that you make in Step 4, you may also need to follow instructions in the wizard to do one or more of the following: a. Choose a domain name provider from a list of available providers. b. Select an alternate domain name if the name you requested is not available. c. Register or transfer a new domain name. d. Record the domain information that you registered with your domain name provider. e. Configure advanced settings. The following tasks are performed based on the selections and current server configuration: Create SBS internet receive connector (skip if exists): new-receiveconnector -Name "Windows SBS Internet Receive SERVER-NAME" -RemoteIPRanges 0.0.0.0-192.167.255.255,192.168.0.1- 192.168.0.1,192.168.1.0-255.255.255.255 -Bindings "192.168.0.2:25" -AuthMechanism "Tls" -PermissionGroups "AnonymousUsers" -Usage "Internet" - Server "SERVER-NAME" You may also refer to the SBS blog step by step for more detailed information: Introducing the Internet Address Management Wizard from part 1 to part 3: ? | Re: SBS 2008 unable to receive email messages - SOLUTION
SOLUTION Placed the following entry n the EMC: EMC/Server Configuration/Hub Transport/Receive Connector/Windows SBS Internet Receive 'ServerName'/Properties/ Network/Remote IP Address(es)/ 0.0.0.0-255.255.255.255 No other address ranges are present in the Remote IP Address(es) window. Once that specified range was activated by clicking Apply, mail started to flow within 10 seconds. Thanks to all who replied. | Re: SBS 2008 unable to receive email messages - SOLUTION Hi Paul, Glad to hear from you and know the issue has been resolved. As we discussed, to configure Exchange to properly host Internet e-mail, the "Internet Address Management Wizard(IAMW)" will have to be completed. IAMW will automatically configure Exchange settings including Send Connector, Receive Connector(including Remote IP Addresss(es)), Accepted domains and Email Address Policy etc. Actually, an Internet Receive Connector will be created after we run IAMW. For example, if the SBS 2008 server IP is 192.168.0.2 and the router in front of it is 192.168.0.1, then the below command shell will be performed by IAMW: Create SBS internet receive connector (skip if exists): new-receiveconnector -Name "Windows SBS Internet Receive SERVER-NAME" -RemoteIPRanges 0.0.0.0-192.167.255.255,192.168.0.1- 192.168.0.1,192.168.1.0-255.255.255.255 -Bindings "192.168.0.2:25" -AuthMechanism "Tls" -PermissionGroups "AnonymousUsers" -Usage "Internet" - Server "SERVER-NAME" Considering the issue had been resolved, to help other people from our experience, I would like to make a summary here. If you have any further concerns with this issue, feel free to let me know. Problem Description: =================== After migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008, internal mail works, but no external emails arrives. Cause: =================== The Remote servers IP range is incorrect on the SBS Internet Receive Connector. Resolution: =================== Modify the Remote IP address range and mail start to flow normally.
