RDP session hangs when logging off SBS 2003

I'm hoping someone can help me out with this problem. When logging off an RDP session on SBS 2003 the desktop icons disappear but it then hangs on the desktop background and doesn't log off. I thought it might just be very slow so i left it 30 minutes and then checked it and it was still stuck in the same place. This is very annoying because I then have to disconnect the session, log on to another server and use Terminal Services Manager to connect to the SBS server and log off the session.

I've checked the system log for the SBS server and the only error when i logged off was saying the Microsoft XPS Document Writer driver is unknown. Nothing in the application log and the security log registered a successful logoff.

I've spent ages searching for a fix but have had no luck, can anyone help?

What antivirus software are you using on the server?

Also, install, update and run a scan with the SBS 2003 BPA to see if it can
find anything that needs addressed:

Trend Micro is the AV on the SBS server. I will install the BPA and see if that comes up with anything.

I ran the BPA and it came up with just one issue about task offloading being enabled. I disabled it and the problem still occurs. I don't think this is a Trend issue because we only upgraded from Sophos to Trend a couple of months ago and this was happening long before that. One of my colleagues at work said that he has seen the same problem over the years with a number of servers at different companies and not just SBS. A workaround would be to set a policy to end all disconnected sessions after 5 minutes, but it would be good to know what causes this problem and how to eliminate it.

Ending the disconnected sessions after 1 minute wouldn't solve the logoff issue but at least it would mean that after 1 minute the dead session would be ended, meaning other people could log on to the server using RDP and we wouldn't have to log on to another server and use Terminal Services Manager to manually log off the session. It's a workaround, but not a fix unfortunately.

I run a SBS 2003 server which is having EXACTLY the same issue. It is also running TrendMicro.

I found your message searching the web for a solution. The issue began at about the same time you posted your message.

Noticing the "coincidence" that you have the same AV I tried unloading the TrendMicro Client on the SBS server and logging off.

Guess - no problem, it logged off rapidly as it should and did not leave the the desktop background hanging.

It is a TrendMicro issue and I have sent a Support Request to them to fix the issue.

I doubt we are alone with the problem.

Next day. Tried logging off and it still logs off cleanly. Apparently unloading the client once was enough to solve the problem (for now?).

BTW Just for the record, the client loads normally when I log on to the server.

I haven't seen this behaviour previously. Might be the result of a component update.

The TM product is Worry Free Business Advanced 5.1 (5.1 is a very recent update of version 5).

The current version is Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security Advanced Version: 5.1 Build: 1142 Release date Mar 05, 2009 - with patches.

New virus signature updated this morning - and the problem is back again.

I have a policy to end all disconnected sessions after 1 minute - and that doesn't solve the issue.

This is/was also a (Symantec) anti-virus issue for quite some time.

You might also have been having the same problem with your previous Anti-Virus product.

As mentioned, I haven't experianced it with Trend Micro before recently and I am now quite sure that it is the culprit on our server - as revealed by my test unloading the client on the server. The fact that the problem returned when a new pattern was updated, also seems to prove this point.

Re: RDP session hangs when logging off SBS 2003

I have various Trend AV products loaded on about 30 servers. For the
most part I get clean RDP sessions. I cannot say it is 100% perfect.
But it is not frequent enough to say that it is a Trend problem. Have
you run the SBS BPA?

One time I did have a Trend AV client goof up a server with a memory
leak. Uninstall, reboot in install fixed that.
