SBS 2008 Roaming Profiles & Redirected Folders? How? To Another Server?

How do I setup Roaming Profiles and Folder Redirection is SBS 2008?
Can I point these to folders on a secondary server, or do I need to
copy the pre-existing profiles, "my documents", etc. over to the SBS box?

How?

Thanks.

When you are talking about 'copying' data, I have to wonder...is this a new
SBS install? Or a migration of an existing domain? The answer would
greatly change the procedure.

Re: SBS 2008 Roaming Profiles & Redirected Folders? How? To AnotherServer?

Cliff,

A little of both! I started it as a migration of an existing domain.
The old PDC was running a TRIAL version of SBS2003 which expired roughly
half-way through the migration. The expiration happened after the OS
had been installed on the new box with the answer file. I've been
proceeding since then as if it were a fresh install.

The Roaming Profiles seems to be working out already. I just went into
the ADUC and did a right-click/properties on a couple users accounts.
When I click on the Profile tab, it shows
"\\Server2\ProfileFolder$\UserName" where Server2 is the actual name of
the file server, ProfileFolder$ is the actual name of the folder, etc.

Does this mean that the Roaming Profiles part is setup (from the server
side)? Do I have to check anything else WRT (With Respect To) Roaming
Profiles, if so, what?

The Folder Redirection is the next issue. How do I redirect the
pertinent folders ("My Documents", "Desktop", etc. / but NOT "Start
Menu") to the file server?

Thanks
F3

P.S.: The file server is a separate box from the SBS2K8 box.

Yes, roaming profiles are set in ADUC. That looks good.

Folder redirection is controlled from a group policy. SBS 2k8, as I recall,
has a wizard to set this up, but I honestly don't remember how granular the
control is. I have a set of starter GPO's that I import into all of my
setups (note I do NOT recommend this for the average SBS user!!!) so the
last time I actually used that wizard was in a beta setup several months
back.

RE: SBS 2008 Roaming Profiles & Redirected Folders? How? To Another Server?

Hello,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that:

You want to know how to configure the folder redirection in the SBS 2008
and whether it is possible to store the redirected folder on the server
other than the SBS server.

If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Suggestions:
=========================
In SBS 2008, you can configure the redirect the Desktop, Documents, Start
Menu folder for users simply in the SBS console. To do that:

1. In the SBS 2008 console, click the Users and Groups tab.
2. In the task menu, click the Redirect folders for user accounts to the
server to open the wizard.
3. Choose the folder(s) you want to redirect and finish the wizard.

Yes, you can point these to folders on a secondary server rather that the
SBS server. By default all redirected folders are stored in
\\SBS\Redirectedfolders\%username% folder. To redirect the folder on a
secondary server, you may need to manually change the path in the SBS
Folder Redirection policy.

For those existing redirected folder on the SBS server, you can simply move
the user's redirected folders to a secondary server with the Move User's
Redirected Documents Data wizard. To do that:

1. In the SBS 2008 console, click the Backup and Server Storage tab.
2. In the task menu, click the Move User's Redirected Documents Data to
open the wizard.
3. Finish the wizard to move the folders.

If you are in the process of migrating SBS 2003 to SBS 2008, you may refer
to the following link to move data to the new SBS 2008 Server.

Migrate settings and data to the Destination Server
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc527469.aspx

To configure the roaming profile for domain users, please note that there
is no SBS wizard that can achieve the goal. You may have to manually
configure the roaming profile setting on each user account's properties.

Hope it helps. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,
Miles Li

Re: SBS 2008 Roaming Profiles & Redirected Folders? How? To AnotherServer?

Miles,

Your understanding is correct.

I must amend my query to state that it appears that Roaming Profiles is
configured already (or at least 90% so).

However, the Folder Redirection to a separate server remains a big question.

I'll attempt to follow your suggestions. Then, as I sometimes like to
say, "I'll turn up the juice and see what shakes loose."

Thanks

Re: SBS 2008 Roaming Profiles & Redirected Folders? How? To AnotherServer?

Thanks Everyone,

It looks like the Roaming Profiles AND Folder Redirection got moved in
the migration! Yippee! I'm going over the folders and verifying the
ownership and permissions. Since the server changed, although the
users were migrated, I'm verifying that all the data folders have all
the right ownership and access privileges.

A little troubleshooting and mopping up. Viola!

Thanks
