How do I extract PST's from old SBS 2003 Exchange ?

I have a customer that wanted the domain name changed of his SBS 2003 Premium
domain. It actually worked out pretty good because the server was having a
number of other issues and it allowed us to use a common email name structure
for everyone.

End result was that some people didn't export their email and then deleted
there old PST/OST files. So now I need to take the exchange mdbdata files
from the old domain (domain-A) and export/extract the user PST's so that I
can import them into the new domain (domain-B).

What do I need to do?

Thankx, David.

Hi David:

The only way know:

Is the first server still in operation?

If so, you can use exmerge, or you can attach one workstation to the old
domain and copy the mail to pst by adding a profile for each user to that
workstation. If the latter, I make a folder for each user name so I can
tell them apart.

If the first server is not still in operation you will have to recreate it
from the SBS install media, down to the identical domain and server names so
that the SBS installation wiz creates the same exchange name space, add the
service pace that was current when the old domain was flattened, and restore
from backup, and then use either approach from above.

You might also ask this question in the exchange group. If you do, no need
to tell them it was SBS, as it will only confuse them. Most folks outside
the SBS community think we practice some "dark art". <g>

I believe one way of doing this is to create a Recovery Storage Group (RSG),
copy your old database files to a temp location on the server, point your
old Exchange database to the RSG, use Exmerge to copy the individual
mailboxes to .psts, and import each .pst into Outlook. This assumes that
each .pst is less than 2GB (a limitation of Exmerge).

Recovering Mailboxes with Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/...e2003-SP1.html

Using ExMerge to recover a Single Mailbox or Mailbox Item
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/...r-Mailbox.html

Optionally, with Exchange 2003 SP1, you should be able to skip the Exmerge
step and recover the mailbox directly to your new Exchange store

After you're done, make sure to delete the Recovery Storage Group. If you
don't, it will cause problems when you try to create new users with the Add
User Wizard.

Hang on... The RSG approach may not work because the domain name is not
the same.

And Quest's RecoveryManager for Exchange. Neither is inexpensive. For future
reference, the best way to handle something like this is to avoid its
necessity - exmerge or manual export in Outlook to PST, not relying on users
to do it.

Hello,

I have used Ontrack PowerControls 4.1 Standard for Exchange and Outlook
for this process and it works very well.

Obviously ... at a price.

Thanks

RE: How do I extract PST's from old SBS 2003 Exchange ?

Hello David,

Thanks for your post and others' input.

Generally I agree with Larry's suggestion that the work round should base
on whether the Exchange server information store on old SBS server still
can be mounted or not. If the server is online, we can use Outlook or
Exmerge to export the required emails from the old database and then import
them to the new server. Otherwise, you may need reinstall the old SBS 2003
server first and then try to restore the old database from a backup mailbox
store.

Here are two good articles for your reference:

Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Disaster Recovery Operations Guide

Using Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Recovery Storage Groups
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...AF6-BEE5-4B35-

Hope this helps. Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to let me know.

Thanks for your earlier feedback!
