| SBS2003 - Standard.....changing the Administrator password Should be a simple question, but..... I want to say that I remember issues when you change the password to the Administrator account. That issue is that it no longer synchs with the DSRM password and that you will get a bunch of Event ID errors. Generally, I would say that I would not want the Administrator account password to be the same as the DSRM Administrator password (that is how I have things set up in "normal" Windows.....). But, SBS is a different animal. Am I missing something (would not be the first time!)? Yes, I know the three rules to SBS2003: 1) use the wizard 2) use the wizard and finally 3) use the wizard. And, just in case that there is any confusion anywhere - use the wizard! ;-) I deal with a lot of SBS2003 environments and changing the Administrator password process seems to be one of the (maybe not so) few things that seems to elude me (have not tried it anywhere yet because I can not seem to get this 'synch' issue with the DSRM password out of my head). Thanks, Cary |

| Re: SBS2003 - Standard.....changing the Administrator password
SBSGolfer, Thanks for the link. How to change the DSRM is not the issue. I know how to do this (setpwd in WIN2000 and ntdsutil in WIN2003...I have done this literally hundreds of times). I guess something in the back of my mind is telling me that the Administrator account's password in Windows and the DSRM Adminstrators account's password in SBS2003 need to be the same. That they synch up somehow. This is purely an SBS2003 question. This is my question. Not sure why I have this stuck in my head. Nah, I have several smaller shops where the Administrator's account is left active and the password is changed every 30-90 days (depending on the shop) with no problems. As with anything, just make sure you have a good backup of your system state so you can restore AD if necessary. -Cliff "Cary Shultz" <cshultz@n0spam.outsourceitcorp.com> wrote in message news:uJGsaIkVJHA.2928@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > SBSGolfer, > > Thanks for the link. Cliff, Thanks. I really do not know why I have that thought in my head. I know that it is there for a reason! Anyway, could very well be that I am remember a little of this and a little of that and somehow my old, tired brain came up with this. Okay. I will change the DSRM Password on one or two SBS2003 environments and see if anything happens in the event logs (not that I do not trust what you are saying...I do!). Then I will go wild! NTBackup (usually not a SBS Backup....) of the system state happens every night. | Re: SBS2003 - Standard.....changing the Administrator password
From an old article; If you change the Administrator password 'after' the application of SBS 2003 SP1 [which includes Windows 2003 SP1] the Administrator password will no longer sync automagically with the DSRM password and we are now like 'normal' Windows Server in this behavior. It can however, be manually adjusted following this KB: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;322672. We expect to have a windows update-able fix for this issue at a later date. :) Cary Shultz wrote: > Cliff, > > Thanks. I really do not know why I have that thought in my head. KJ, True - but the people with whom I work question everything and want documentation. Which is a really good thing. I just could not find anything...so, that link that you provided was the "smoking gun" that I needed. BTW - did a patch every get released? I am going to be changing the Administrator password shortly for about 15 SBS2003 environments. Naturally, not all at once...one by one and then deal with the issues and then move on to the next one. KJ, I ass/u/me that you know (or at least know of...) both as both are MVPs. I know them both from my days in the AD news group. Paul Bergson has a couple of nice little utilities out there that he so kindly makes available. Paul Williams does a lot of scripting stuff....so, it could have been either! I would bet on Paul Bergson, too! Cary "kj [SBS MVP]" <KevinJ.SBS@SPAMFREE.gmail.com> wrote in message news:OZ%231mEzVJHA.5520@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > errr... Probably Bergson. Both are script wizards and PB helped me out with a couple of custom ones in the past. Rich Mueller also made many user and group AD scripts public. btw, I haven't found the one I was think of yet.
