| Backup error - An inconsistency was encountered on the requested m
OS: Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 SP2 Backup Device: LTO2 internal Tape Backup Backup configured via: SBS backup wizard Problem: When I run backups I receive a constant error "An inconsistency was encountered on the requested media". I have searched many places and have not found any solution related to SBS 2003 R2. I have posted the latest backup log with the error below. What I want to achieve: I know I can schedule the backup directly with NTbackup without verification, however I don't want to do that and want to use the SBS backup wizard to run a successful backup. What have I done already: Updated all the device and tape drivers. Looked at the VSS admin list writers. 11/11/2008 8:00 PM ------------------------------- Date: 11/11/2008 Time: 8:00 PM User: SYSTEM ------------------------------- Backup Runner started. | RE: Backup error - An inconsistency was encountered on the requested m
Hello, Thank you for posting here. According to your description, I understand that: You receive the error "An inconsistency was encountered on the requested media" in the SBS backup. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know. Typically, this error indicates that the tape or tape drive encounter some problems driver is in some errors to write date on. I would like to recommend that you first backup onto another tape to have a try. If possible, check it works if you replace another drive driver. Please collect the following information for further investgation: 1. Please collect the MPS report on the SBS server that will contain the event logs and system diagnoise logs. It will help us to troubleshoot the issue. Microsoft Product Support's Reporting Tools (MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...C7C-7CA5-408F- 88B7-F9C79B7306C0&displaylang=en 2. Connect the tape drive to another Win 2003 server and do the same test. 3. Backup any small folder to the tape, for a test. 4. Backup the drive c: to a file in the local disk. Hope it helps. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know. | RE: Backup error - An inconsistency was encountered on the request
Thank you, Miles. The tape drive runs perfectly, infact this is our second tape drive. There was nothing wrong with the first one, however we had it changed to another brand new one. The server is less than a month old. The tapes are also brand new. I will run the MPSRPT_Setuppref and email the CAB file to you "Miles Li [MSFT]" wrote: > Hello, > > Thank you for posting here. > > According to your description, I understand that: > You receive the error "An inconsistency was encountered on the requested > media" in the SBS backup. > > If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know. > > Typically, this error indicates that the tape or tape drive encounter some > problems driver is in some errors to write date on. | RE: Backup error - An inconsistency was encountered on the request Hello, Thanks for the update. Please take your time to collect the MPS report on the SBS server. Based on my experience, this issue will also occur if the tape device driver is out of date. So I suggest that we firstly contact the device vendor to make sure that you are using the latest LTO tape device drivers. Then, let's do the following: 1. On SBS Server, click Start -> Run, type REGEDIT and click OK. 2. Go to the following keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NTMS\OMID\Tape\HP HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NTMS\OMID\Tape\MTF HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NTMS\OMID\Tape\QIC 3. Please make sure that the path to the dll file is correct. Also, please search your SBS Server to make sure that the dll files are there. 4. If there are other registry keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NTMS\OMID\Tape, please right click this key, select to export the registry key, rename the .reg file to .old, and email it to me. 5. On the SBS Server, click Start -> Run, type MSCOFIG and click OK. 6. Go to services tab click the option to hide all Microsoft services, then click the Disable All button. 7. Go to Startup tab, click the Disable All button. 8. Restart the SBS Server. 9. Click Start -> Run, type NTBACKUP and click OK. 10. Click the "Advanced Mode" on the welcome page and then go to Backup tape. 11. Configure an backup and run this backup to see if it works. Please also collect the following information for analyzing this issue: 1. On the SBS Server, compress and email me at v-mileli@microsoft.com with the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Support\Backup Logs" folder. On the SBS Server, compress and email me with the "C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data" folder. 2. If possible, check how it works if you attach the tape drive on another computer and take a backup. Hope it helps. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.
