Can't speak for the OP, but I do on some clients, and have the same
problem.

If you have some info on ISA settings to make Chris, would be much
appreciated, TIA.

RE: Error code: 0x8000ffff - Installing Windows Live Messenger

Hi conor,

Thanks for your post and others' input.

First, I would like to know if you are using SBS 2003 server and this issue
occurs on the SBS client computer. If you are not using SBS 2003
server/client, please resubmit this issue in our special Windows Live
Messenger newsgroup. By posting there, you may get some pointers from others
who may have had similar experience that they can share with you.

However, if you are using SBS 2003 products, I am not sure if you have
checked the website Merv shared. Based on research and my experience, this
issue may occur if the previous MSN or Windows Live Messenger is corrupted
and affect the new installation. Let's try the following steps to
troubleshoot it:

Step 1. Run Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to clean all previous version
of MSN messenger or Live Messenger and then reinstall the latest version Live
Messenger.

Windows Installer CleanUp Utility might be able to help. You can use the
utility to remove installation information for programs that were installed
by using Windows Installer. Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will
remove the installation files so that you can start the installation,
upgrade, or uninstall over.

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en-us

a. Please download and save the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from the
above link.
b. Then, please run it from Start-> All Programs-> Windows Install Clean Up.
c. Please delete all listed MSN messenger or Live Messenger related programs
one by one.
d. Download and install the latest version of Live Messenger.

Windows Live Messenger 8.1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

If the installation still fails, go on with Step 2.

Step 2. Try to install Windows Live Messenger again in Windows Clean Boot
mode.

Basically, a Clean Boot turns off all of the advanced features of the
Operating System at the same time. We then reboot to try to reinstall Live
Messenger again to see if the problem reoccurs.

Let's go through the Startup Group to narrow down the root cause of the
issue:

a. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks)
into the Open box, and click OK.
b. Click Startup and click to check the first unselected item.
c. Click Apply, click OK and click Yes to restart the computer. .
d. Try to install Windows Live Messenger again in Windows Clean Boot mode

Restore Clean Boot
==========================
To revert to the Normal Startup, please perform the following steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
b. Check the option "Normal Startup".
c. Click OK and then click Restart.

If the issue still occurs, please let me know:

1. Please help me collect some information for further investigation:

MPS report for Exchange:

1. Please download a tool from the following link:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo..._SETUPPerf.EXE

2. Double-click the downloaded EXE file to collect the MPS report.
3. Please send the generated CAB file to me at: v-robmen@microsoft.com

Hope this helps. Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to let me know.

Thanks for your earlier feedback!

Sincerely,
