SBS Backup failure - constant

I'm running Windows Server 2003 SBS SP2 and I've been having the same problem for the last few months now with the Backup utility. I'm backing up to an external USB hard drive. The backup operation continually fails, and, on test restore, I get the error message "the backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used". I've rebuilt the job, reformatted the drive all to no avail. Here's the logfile from the most recent job:

Backup Runner finished.

In my even viewer logs, I run across errors 8001, 8017, 8019, all associated with ntbackup. I'm also getting warning event ids 1524 "Windows cannot unload your classes registry file - it is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded when it is no longer in use. "

& 1517: "Windows saved user SERVER\SBS Backup User registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

Please help!

Thanks in advance

Re: SBS Backup failure - constant

Take a look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555613 let us know what
media you are backing up to, the size of successful backups if any and the
free space on the drives you are backing up and the backup media.

I'm backing up to a 153.38GB partition on a 500GB local hard disk. The last backup that ran was approx. 92GB in size. I've reformatted the drive twice, it's NTFS, I've rebuilt the job twice, the job is configured to retain only one backup file, so there is no space issue. The job is a full backup, not an incremental.

And yes, I've googled this: circular logging is not enabled, and all my list writers are reporting no errors.

Any ideas?

Re: SBS Backup failure - constant

In Exchange System Manager, do you have Recovery Storage Group listed? If
so, delete it and then try the backup again.

Re: SBS Backup failure - constant

That is... delete all databases in the Recovery Storage Group and delete
the group itself.

Re: SBS Backup failure - constant

You may also want to install, update and then run a scan with the SBS 2003
BPA:

Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Best Practices Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Also, Removable Storage service:

Check your System Event Logs for Source: Removable Storage Service. See if
this was stopped at any time during the backup job (like about 1:01 am when
the backup job reported the error).

A backup job fails in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;903007

Is this local drive an EIDE drive, or is a SATA drive. And is it on the
same controller channel as the C: drive or is it on a different channel
(maybe the one with the CDROM)?

I think I may have fixed the problem. I ended up re-formatting the drive, and rebuilding the whole job under an admin account that wasn't the default admin account, and unchecked the box that said 'restrict access to owner/admin' and ran a manual backup successfully on Friday.

Thanks for all your help!
