| Backup Fails With Volume Shadow Copy Error??
In the last 2 days have started getting this: Backup Status Operation: Backup Active backup destination: File Media name: "Small Business Server Backup (01).bkf created 04/09/2008 at 21:00" Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1. Timeout before function completed Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff. Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff Aborting Backup. ---------------------- The operation did not successfully complete. Can't find anything that seems relevant in KB articles. Server is backing up to External USB HDD. I think this may be down to one of the recent updates as this has not been a problem ever since I started using this backup method. External HDD is formatted with NTFS not FAT32. Any help appreciated. Cheers, Siv -- Martley, Near Worcester, UK |

Try this Open up your Scheduled Events Delete Current Shadow copy events Re RUN Backup Wizard (it will create new shadow copy events.) Russ, In scheduled tasks I have a number of entries for things like: "Back up Small Business Server" "Collect Usage Data" "Small Business Server - Server Status Report" Also there are two entries labelled as follows: ShadowCopyVolume{6ffff160-05d9-11da-a379-806e6f6e6963} ShadowCopyVolume{6ffff162-05d9-11da-a379-806e6f6e6963} Are these the entries I should delete? | Re: Backup Fails With Volume Shadow Copy Error??
Russ, No I didn't. presumably if I repeat the process now by removing the ones it has subsequently created and then run the backup wizard again this will cure it? I have just re-installed my machine so haven't been looking in since Friday last. I appreciate you have a business of your own to run, so please do not worry about the time taken to respond. I am very grateful that you did in the first place. | Re: Backup Fails With Volume Shadow Copy Error??
UH? I'll try again Delete the shadow copies in Schedule events RE RUN the SBS backup Wizard. (It should create new events) Sometimes after this rebooting the server helps. | Re: Backup Fails With Volume Shadow Copy Error??
Russ, What I thought would have happened after I deleted them previously but didn't then re-run the backup wizard would be that when I logged in I would find some new Shadow Copy entries and that I would have to delete them again. My thinking being that as the backup had run since it would have re-created the shadow copy scheduled tasks. Hence my comments. I just logged into the server and it hadn't, so I just re-ran the backup wizard and will wait to see if Monday night's backup works OK. Thanks again for clarifying. | Re: Backup Fails With Volume Shadow Copy Error??
Russ, It didn't work, I got this a few minutes ago (backup starts at 9PM): Backup Status Operation: Backup Active backup destination: File Media name: "Small Business Server Backup (01).bkf created 08/09/2008 at 21:00" Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1. Timeout before function completed Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff. Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff Aborting Backup. ---------------------- The operation did not successfully complete. ---------------------- I had a look in the Scheduled Tasks and there is a task named as follows: ShadowCopyVolume{6ffff160-05d9-11da-a379-806e6f6e6963} I find if I then do a manually started backup it works OK. Could it be something to do with VSS not kicking in fast enough but actually does which is why the manual attempt works? I find that on nearly all my servers VSS is one of three services that is always stopped and I have given up restarting them as they always stop again within a day or so? Once thing I did notice was that the Sophos Antivirus RouterNT.exe application was going mental and taking 50% or more CPU, so whether this was getting in the way of the backup process as when I terminated it the manually started backup seemed to start quite quickly after that where previously it had sat for some time just saying it was starting? Perhaps Sophos are conflicting with VSS??
