| Adding user exchange mailbox only Hi everyone, I'm running Windows SBS 2003 Standard fully patched and until now whenever I've added a new user account I've used the wizard in the server management console, which automatically creates the user's email settings in exchange. What I would like to do now is simply create a some additional email accounts without creating an associated user account, and be able to login to those accounts with OWA. Is it possible to do this or do I have to create the user account in the same way that I've done before? Any help, pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Wayne |

Mailboxes have to be associated with user accounts, and a single account can only have a single mailbox. Can you more fully describe what you're trying to accomplish? There might be another way to do it, such as using public folders or assigning multiple e-mail addresses to your mailbox/account. Hi Dave, Thanks for the quick response. Ideally what I would like to do is create a few separate email addresses for the company (i.e. marketing@domain.com, sales@domain.com, accounts@domain.com etc) so customers outside of the organisation have a specific but general email address to use, without publishing individual email addresses for users who work in those respective departments. Obviously as these are general public consumption email addresses, there will be no need to create individual accounts on SBS as I would still like the users to login with the respective user names etc, but they can then check general email for their departments by logging into Outlook Web Access using the email addresses mention above. I hope this helps. Kind Regards, Wayne "Dave Nickason [SBS MVP]" <gwdibble@NOSPAM.frontiernet.net> wrote in message news:%23y5QdLF6IHA.1176@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... The usual best way to handle these is public folders, which get an email address and the mail is delivered to that public folder. You can then assign users with the appropriate permissions to those public folders and when they logon to their own mailbox and view the public folders. -- Cris Hanna [SBS-MVP] ------------------------------------------------- Microsoft MVPs Independent Experts (MVPs do not work for MS) Real World Answers --------------------------------------------------------- Please do not contact me directly regarding issues "Wayne Smith" <waynesmith1971(NoSpam)@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:BCF5B121-C307-42B9-B586-E703D0C98997@microsoft.com... Agreed. I have some cases where I use public folders, and others where I use a publicly available distribution list. For example, employment@ goes to a DL including the owner, the office manager, and anyone interested in who we hire for the job we're advertising. Hi Guys, Thanks for your input so far, and Dave I had already read that post you mentioned and no doubt I will go over it again when I get to that stage, but for the moment I'm still having a few problems getting the initial folder to accept email. What I've done so far is the following: - On the SBS Server I've opened Exchange Manager and navigated to: Server > Folders > Public Folders and right-clicked > New > Public Folder > on the General tab in the Name box I typed Sales followed by Apply > OK - I then right-clicked the newly created Sales folder and selected Properties, clicked the Email Addresses tab and clicked New > SMTP Address and then I entered the address to associate with this folder (i.e. sales@domain.com) followed by Apply > OK - I then selected the Permissions tab followed by Client Permissions > Add and selected my name from the list of users, clicked Add > OK > selected my name from the Client Permissions list and changed the Role from Author to Owner and clicked OK - From there I selected Directory Rights > Add > Advanced > Find > highlighted my name in the list and clicked OK > OK and allocated Full Control in the Permissions box, clicked Apply > OK and then repeated this step for the Administrative Rights and clicked Apply > OK - From a desktop XP Pro machine that I'm logged onto I opened Outlook and created a new email message to sales@domain.com and clicked Send, soon after a message arrived in my inbox from 'System Administrator' with the subject line 'Undeliverable: Test email', with the following contents: Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: Test email Sent: 17/07/2008 23:35 The following recipient(s) could not be reached: Sales on 17/07/2008 23:35 A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your administrator. <server.domain.local #5.3.5> ================== And now I'm stuck and scratching my head as to what I may have done wrong. Wayne Because "sales" is an address in your active directory...you would not address the email to the external email address. To truly test if its working...have someone from outside your company send a test mail to it.
