VSS Errors in EventID and problems with ntbackup

I have installed Windows Server 2003 for SBS with Service Pack 2 on my system. I am getting the below errors in the Event Log after having to do a repairs after a power failure:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: VSS
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 8212
    Date: 19/02/2008
    Time: 9:27:34 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: SERVER
    Description:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Writer with name MSDEWriter and ID {f8544ac1-0611-4fa5-b04b-f7ee00b03277} attempted to subscribe during setup.

There is also some other errors in the event logs that also has the same Event ID as above but with the below descriptions:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Writer with name Registry Writer and ID {afbab4a2-367d-4d15-a586-71dbb18f8485} attempted to subscribe during setup.

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Writer with name Event Log Writer and ID {eee8c692-67ed-4250-8d86-390603070d00} attempted to subscribe during setup.

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Writer with name COM+ REGDB Writer and ID {542da469-d3e1-473c-9f4f-7847f01fc64f} attempted to subscribe during setup.

It will then give me the below error in the event log:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: VSS
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 12302
    Date: 19/02/2008
    Time: 9:27:34 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: SERVER
    Description:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: An internal inconsistency was detected in trying to contact shadow copy service writers. Please check to see that the Event Service and Volume Shadow Copy Service are operating properly.

What should i do to fix it? Thanks.

Re: VSS Errors in EventID and problems with ntbackup

If I am getting the same error like you then I usually delete the Scheduled VSS Events in the Schedule events and then re-run the backup Wizard, and it will create new events. After that, if I want to test it manually, then I run the VSS Events to see if they pass or fail. Incase if it fails in your case, then post the results here.

Ok, I did what you suggested and removed the scheduled ShadowCopyVolume event and then re-ran the backup wizard. It did as you said and recreated the new event. But when I tried to manually run the VSS event, then I was getting the same error messages in the Event logs.

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: VSS
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 8212
    Date: 19/02/2008

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Writer with name MSDEWriter and ID {f8544ac1-0611-4fa5-b04b-f7ee00b03277} attempted to subscribe during setup.

You can try to change the below registry key value and see if that helps:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Settings MSDEVersionChecking [REG_DWORD] from "1" to "0"
