Mouse pointer not aligned

I am using a New Vista PC. Installed Optical Cordless Mouse. Did not install
its software since the OS assigns/installs the Mouse driver. Encountered
alignment problems. In order to click on something (especially when the item
is small; I am using a High Screen resolution with my 22" Monitor) I must be
real careful and place the mouse finger tip slighly above the item I am going
to click on.....then it works. But if I place the end of the finger right on
the item, it will not. Also, sometimes no matter what I do, alignment or
not, nothing will happen. Thinking maybe it was the mouse, I went out and
purchased a NEW Optical Cordless Mouse....works the same way so at least I
ruled out the mouse as the problem. I did try the new mouse before I
installed the software that came with it, it had the same problems....I did
Install the Software that came with the new Mouse but it made no difference.
So this must be a Vista problem.

I have checked for Vista Updates at Microsoft....nothing available (I have
the PC set to Automatically Download Updates)

Suggestions?

It would appear that it is not a Vista problem, but a
failure to read and follow instructions.

From what you are saying, you did not install the software
in accordance with the instructions. Usually the software
states that it must be installed before the new cordless
mouse is connected. Then you shut down the computer, attach
the new mouse, start the computer up again and Widows will
see the new hardware and install the proper drivers for it.
What you appear to have done is install the mouse first and
as a result Windows found a driver that 'kind' of works with
it so you would have some functionality.

Suggest you go to Control Panel, Device Manager, select the
mouse, uninstall the driver for it, reboot the computer and
with luck on the reboot Windows will find the 'new' device
and install the proper drivers for it. (That's provided that
you have installed the correct, compatible with Vista,
software.)

Hi, I have teh same problem. Did you ever get it to work? I have called pc manufacturer and microsoft...they said it all looks fine. Had them even do a connect to my computer to view.....they said looked fine and was working fine on their end. I don't know what the heck to do! Have considered returning pc...back to a new one with XP i guess.

I have the same problem.

It is most likely a Vista problem because the problem is not with the mouse pointer itself or its response. The problem is associated with the mouse "hotspot". When I click it is as if the click occured to above and to the left of the mouse.

This occured with both my MS mouse and Logitech mouse. The logitech mouse was installed "correctly" as instructed above.

I have the same problem and it is driving me mad. Brand new Dell computer, new Dell mouse, an extra Microsoft mouse, tried several USB ports... The same problem. The "hotspot" is off.

The only that that works sometimes is changing the mouse pointer scheme. That works with the 3d bronze the best (or maybe only one), and again only sometimes, and tempermentally.

I have to point at something with the stem of the pointer, or to adjust screen size, I have to move a whole centimeter down and the the right below the right hand corner of the screen I'm trying to size. It's rather rediculous.

everyone else with the same problem.

I also HAD this problem. I have a new XPS 420 system with Vista.
While reading through this post, I started messing with the mouse
settings in the Control Panel. Under the Pointers tab, the Scheme was
set to Windows Aero. I chose (None), clicked Apply, and the problem
went away.

Before I could not close a window using the X if it was in the upper
right hand corner of the screen. Now, even while using Radio365
(which has a very small close button), the "close" dialog box is
displayed when the point of the arrow is in the center of the X - as
it should be.

Thanks for the post!! disabling Aero worked for me too. Sounds like
if you own a Dell XPS 420 you should change this setting straight out
of the box.

I agree, by turning off either the Aero theme in the "Personalization"
control panel (so your computer goes back to looking like Win2000) or
turning off the Aero mouse pointer theme (so your mouse looks like
it's from Win98), the pointer is accurate. I have a feeling it is
related to the video card. Sounds like the above people have a Dell
XPS 420, do you also have the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT video card (that
was a $200 upgrade!)? I hope there is a video card driver upgrade very
soon!

Boy is this one on the money. I have a new XPS 420 with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT video card and exactly the same level of frustration with the mouse pointer.

ME TOO, too all of the above problems and symptoms.

I believe "me too" posts ARE important and value added to show that
you are not the only one who is going crazy with a particularly
frustrating issue.

Spent rather frustrating day figuring out how to get the alignment right so that the mouse clicks where I intend to on Vista

I found that the following worked for me:
Go to Mouse Properties
UNCHECK - Enhance Pointer Precision (under Motion block)
UNCHECK - Automatically move pointer to ... (Under snap to Block)

This has seemed to solve the problem for me.

I had also tried adjusting screen resolution, Using Bronze pointer etc but nothing quite worked. Now it seems to work with Window Aero (system scheme) too.

I wish there were was a way that this reply could go out to all that posted
in this thread....one that I originated. I worked with Del lXPS support
today. I posted the problem originally in a Logitech Forum. A response
there recommended I go to MSPAINT and see how the Mouse pointer aligned when
drawing with the pencil. When I did that the line and Pencil were almost 1/4"
off. Working with Dell Tech I showed them this, and, also how difficult
sometimes it was to align the normal Mouse pointer up with Buttons, etc.

The Fix....the Tech Downloaded and Installed the Updated Driver and ATI
Software that is available at the Dell Website for my XPS that is shown for
the ATI HD2600 XT Card. if you go to MY ACCOUNT at Dell.com, login, click
on your XPS system then Downloads, all downloads for your XPS system appear.
The tech Downloaded the driver and Software. I then went back to MSPaint and
the Line and Pencil are Right on. Dell advised only to download Updates from
their site because many times the Updates are different from the updates
found at the Manufacturers Site. If you still have the problem, download the
updates and let me know if it also corrects the problem for you.. If the two
of find this corrects the Mouse Point alignment problem, we can feel fairly
confident...the fix is the Updated driver and software.

One issue I have noticed is the Monitor is much brighter, almost too
bright....and I have the GAMMA Setting in the ATI Control Panel at it lowest
setting. It is as if the Driver is over powering the Monitor when it comes
to brightness.....so I'll need to play with the brightness settings.
