Reinstall Microsoft XPS Document Writer Printer in Vista

How do I reinstall the Microsoft XPS Document Writer Printer in Vista if it was deleted from the Printers folder as well as deleted from the Drivers tab on the Printer Server Properties?

I've tried using the drivers in the "C:\Windows\System32\spool\tools\Microsoft XPS Document Writer" folder on the XPSPort but I get "Printer driver was not installed. Unable to find a core driver package that is required by the printer driver package."

Is Word 2007 installed?
You could see if reinstalling the Save as pdf and xps add-in works.

Apparently xps printing support for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 came
with the .NET3 framework and also the XPS Essentials Pack.

Stumped. The experience pack won't install on Vista so that kills that idea.
The error message is because NET3 is part of Vista and, apparently, won't
install over the top to bring back that printer.

you can get the redistributable package for XPS but I'm really not sure how
an installation will go.

No, I only have Microsoft Office 2003.

That is for Microsoft Office 2007 only.

I have tried to use the Printer Wizard but initially "Microsoft" wasn't listed in the manufactures. I could browse to "C:\Windows\System32\spool\tools\Microsoft XPS Document Writer" and the wizard attempted to install the printer on the local XPSPort but it failed with the message "Printer Driver was not installed. Unable to find a core driver pacakge that is required by the printer driver package."

I've tried to install the XPS Essentials Pack but it fails with the message "The update does not apply to your system" when trying to install the XPSEP Vista 32 bit.msu on my Windows Vista Business 32-bit notebook. The .NET Framework 3.0 also fails to install because it says "You must use 'Turn Windows features on or off' in the Control Panel to install or configure Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0."

Directly on the Redistributing Windows Vista Print Drivers page: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device...rv_redist.mspx it says "Note: These packages are not intended for use on Windows Vista and later releases and driver setup packages should not attempt to install these packages on Windows Vista. The XPSDrv system components are pre-installed on Windows Vista and later releases."

I guess the only real solution to this problem is to repair Vista. I don't think I'm going that far to reinstall the XPS printer. I sent an email to prninfo@microsoft.com about this problem so maybe I'll get a response back soon.

Yes, the XPS printer is now listed under the Printer list of the "Microsoft" manufacturer list, but only because I browsed to "C:\Windows\System32\spool\tools\Microsoft XPS Document Writer." I believe the printer was removed from the list you are talking about because I deleted the "driver and driver package" from the Drivers tab on the Printer Server Properties.

Open Printers folder
Click Add a Printer
In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a local printer
Under Use an existing port click XPSPort: and then click Next
Under Manufacturer click Microsoft and under Printers click the XPS Document
Writer
Complete the wizard.

Read Adrians solution and add the printer using the Add Printer Wizard.

The drivers are list in the manufacture model page unless you have a
corrupted infcache.1 file.

I just removed the Driver Package and that did not prevent me from
reinstalling the driver and printer

I copied those files from another Vista installation but I am unsure about what to do with them.

I also did step 13 in the following document while trying to repair my Adobe PDF printer a while back of which did not work.

I have since gotten all my printers to reinstall, just not the XPS one.

Step 13 of the Adobe document told me to search http://support.microsoft.com for the 810894 article. I did the following in that article.

I started Windows Explorer, and then deleted all files and folders in the following two folders:

• c:\windows\system32\spool\printers
• c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86

I Clicked Start, clicked Run, typed regedit in the Open box, and then pressed ENTER.

I navigated to and then clicked the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86

Then viewed the list of subkeys, which were only the following:

• Drivers
• Print Processors

I didn't delete any subkeys becuase the above mentioned were the only ones in there.

I located and then expanded the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers

I then located and expanded the Version-3 subkey and deleted the printer driver entries.

Then I navigated to and then clicked the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors

Then viewed the list of subkeys. I only deleted the keys that pertained to what I was doing so I left the following keys in there.

• Bluetooth Printer Port
• BP20 Langmon
• Local Port
• Standard TCP/IP Port
• USB Monitor
• WSD Port

Then I restarted and reinstalled all my printers. Only the XPS printer wouldn't reinstall.

Hello,

I am experiencing the "unable to find a core driver package" error. I'm
looking for a solution as well. In my case, I am trying to (re)install a HP
PSC1315 printer.

In my case, it begain when I could not install any USB devices without
problems. I had deleted the infcache.1 file as suggested by others. I was
finally clued into what was going wrong by looking at the report files
located in c:\Windows\WER\ReportQueue. (There's probably a more appropriate
location to find the information.)

Basically, the installation wasn't successful because "The system cannot
find the file specified." Somehow, it was only looking for the driver files
in the c:\Windows\inf directory.

After copying the driver file to this directory, I was successful in
installing my USB devices.

Since you know (from the previous post) what files need to be copied, and
you have those files from another Vista installation, you might want to try
to put them to the c:\Windows\inf directory. I don't know if this will
work, but it may be worth a try.

I combined the files from the other Vista installation and the files from the "C:\Windows\System32\spool\tools\Microsoft XPS Document Writer" folder and put them in a folder called "XPS" and copied it to the "C:\Windows\inf" directory and then tried to install the MXDW on the XPSPort; it didn't work.

Now at least Vista is prompting me to "Provide a printer driver." I believe it was asking for the Vista install DVD; I put that in but it didn't work anyway.

Are you saying that I should install the MXDW in XP Compatibility Mode? How do I do that if I don't have an executable file?

Where would I download MXDW? I think you are referring to the XPS Essentials Pack but the XPSEP Vista 32 bit.msu file does not have any options it its properties to run it in XP Compatibility Mode.

Quite the saga actually, I hope that I've helped others with this same problem. And thanks to everyone else who helped!

I'd set a Restore Point and then try it (possibly install in XP
compatibility mode).
You are missing the sub-system and that should install it. Whether it works
or not is another story.

It seems easier to try than a full system repair.

that's what I'd try but I'd back up the system by setting a Restore point
first.. Will it allow you to download it? Either that or the XPS Experience
pack.

You were right! I had a corrupt INFCACHE.1 file. I now have the Microsoft XPS Document Writer Printer reinstalled on Vista!

The FIX:

1. Type "C:\Windows\inf" into the search box on the start menu.
2. Locate the INFCACHE.1 file and right-click it and select Properties.
3. On the INFCACHE.1 Properties window tab to the "Security" tab and click the "Edit" button to change permissions on this file.
4. On the Permissions for INFCACHE.1 window click the "Add" button.
5. On the Select Users or Groups window click the "Advanced" button.
6. A new Select Users or Groups window will open and then click the "Find Now" button.
7. The search results are sorted alphabetically; locate the username you logon to Windows with and then double-click.
8. Under the "Enter the objects names to select..." you should see something like this YOURCOMPUTERNAME\Yourusername.
9. Now click the OK button.
10. You will now return to the Permissions for INFCACHE.1 window.
11. Under the Permissions for Yourusername you need to tick "Full Control" under the Allow column. Click the "Apply" button and then the "OK" button.
12. You will be prompted with a "Windows Security" window, just click the "Yes" button and continue.
13. Delete the INFCACHE.1 file.
14. Restart your computer.
15. Open the Printers folder.
16. Click the "Add a printer" button.
17. Select "Add a local printer."
18. Select the XPSPort on the "Use an existing port" radio button and click the "Next" button.
19. Locate Microsoft under the Manufacturer and Microsoft XPS Document Writer under the Printers and click the "Next" button.
20. If prompted to "replace the current driver," do so and click the "Next" button.
21. Chose a name for the printer and you're done!

P.S. This trick works for the Adobe PDF printer as well.

I uninstalled Microsoft XPS Document Writer using 'XPS Removal Tool'.I want to reinstall it using the following steps.
1)Control panel
2) Clicked on Printers in Classic View
3) On menu bar clicked on "Add a Printer"
4) On the dialog box that pops up - click on "Add a local printer"
5) Selected "Use an existing port:" and selected "XPS port: (local port)" from the drop down menu -- clicked next
6) In the dialog box that pops up select "Microsoft" under Manufacturer and "Microsoft XPS Document Writer" under printers
7) Click next and on next page select Replace the current driver
8) Click next and finish.But in 5)step I am not getting the option "XPS port: (local port)" in the drop down menu.can any one tell me the solution and where Microsoft XPS Document Writer print driver is located in System.

The final solution

I had the same problem on a Windows XP machine which had problems printing to a Canon 320. I uninstalled all the printers, including the XPS printer, and when I tried to reinstall it, it wouldn't show Microsoft as a manufacturer or XPS as a printer.

The solution finally was to add the Text only printer from the Generic manufacturer, and then, on the printer properties, change the driver to Microsoft XPS. This worked perfectly.
