Self Update is not working after Upgrade to WSUS 3.0SP1
After updating to SP1 from WSUS 3.0 the event viewer shows many errors that
Self Update is not working. The WSUS server in our enviroment is configured
with all defaults and we do not have a proxy server. Sycnronizations on the
server are sucessful but clients are unable to check in with server and
receive updates. Below is the WindowsUpdate.log from a client that was
previously working.

We are having the same issue in our environment only its worst. The 7.1 agent
is causing literally hundreds of machines in our environment to experience a
memory leak. The svchost process is spiking to 100% making the pc unusable. I
haven't been able to find mention anywhere of the 7.1 wua anywhere on
microsoft's website. This is causing a lot of issues with us and we have
heard of the same problem elsewhere.

I upgraded a 2003 member server running WSUS 3.0SP1 to a DC and WSUS became
non-functional to the point that I completely removed WSUS, the database, and
the downloaded patch repository. Install went fine but am now receiving the
exact same errors you describe here.
I get the Self-Update is not working on the WSUS server and I get the below
entry in the WindowsUpdate log of the client.
Please, any help with this? Larry?

Re: Self Update is not working after Upgrade to WSUS 3.0SP1
First please do not reply to a post containing a new totally unrelated issue. It
simply makes tracking the issue harder for all. Start your own new thread.

Second, your issue is not simply WSUS. When you run DCPROMO on an IIS server it
will break IIS. This is because the IIS accounts deleted and new one created in
AD (or Local) and IIS does not know these new account so cannot login.

The solution is to uninstall IIS and then re-install it. If WSUS is installed
then you need to uninstall WSUS before uninstalling IIS and re-install it after.

Re: Self Update is not working after Upgrade to WSUS 3.0SP1
Thanks, Dave. I thought my issue was related since I was getting the exact
same errors as the initial threads poster. Anyway, I had already done as you
suggested after running DCPROMO. Uninstalled and re-installed IIS and then
proceeded with the WSUS re-install.
Turns out that the SelfUpdate virtual directory was never created during the
re-install. ??? I ran up IIS manager and created the virtual dir and ensured
it had the proper anonymous access privileges and WHALAA! Clients started
updating.
Just thought I would update with the solution since I had already posted the
question here.

Re: Self Update is not working after Upgrade to WSUS 3.0SP1
I too, am seeing this annoying error in the WSUS (server) Application event log. I have tried all possible solutions including:

-Re-creating the Virtual Directory "selfupdate" --> allowing anon access
-Running 'installselfupdateonport80.vbs'

With no luck at all. If someone has a solution i would be greatly appreciative.
