WSUS Clients Hangs on reboot

Hi,

Some of our Win 2000 wsus clients are not able to schedule a needed reboot
after
installing patches. Windowsupdatelog shows :
AU invoking RebootSystem (OnRebootRetry)
WARNING: SUS Client is rebooting system.

Nothing in event logs...

These two lines loops until we do a "manual" restart...
When we do a system restart... Windows hangs on the shutdown screen and we
need to do a hard reset to solve the problem...

Also in the Windows update logs of these servers shows :WARNING:
RebootSystem (InitiateSystemShutdown) failed. , error = 0x8007045B...

After
some research i've found that this means that windows is shuting down ... So
It seems that AU is not able to schedule a shutdown because a shutdown is
ongoing.... ;-)

Any ideas on this ?
I've seen numerous forums post regarding this topic but found no solutions
so far..

Thanks !

Re: WSUS Clients Hangs on reboot

I experience the same problem.

We have problems with Windows 2003 Server and Windows 2003 SBS.
We are using F-Secure AV.

After much searching, the best help I've found so far is that it might
have to do with AV. I have opened a case with F-Secure about this. They
told me to try and reinstall AV on the server, but I have not done this
yet.

Many have this problem, but noone has the answer?

Re: WSUS Clients Hangs on reboot

Hi,

At first I tought that is was related to WSUS/AUpdates...
But it seems the "hangs on reboot" issue occurs more often and is not
related to AU or WSUS. Some of our Sys Admins. Have experienced the same
problem on brand new server while doing a "restart"

I do not think it is related to AV software... We are using McAffee

Maybe it is some kind of new problem (maybe due to a patch)...
The same problem occured with Win98 some years ago... Microsft released a
fix back then ...

I think i'll open a new post in a Windows 2000/2003 forum

thanks
David

I would agree, this is most likely related to your AV software. It has been
related to AV software almost every time in the past when this scenario has
been reported in this newsgroup.

I recommend waiting for a response from F-Secure.

This we have pretty much confirmed over several instances in this newsgroup
during the past year.

In fact, the majority of cases reported were using McAffee(sic), and the
majority of cases resolved traced it to the AV software. YMMV.

Re: WSUS Clients Hangs on reboot

If it hasn't been mentioned before, the items to set an exception for
in your AV software, listed in this KB article, might help.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822158/en-us

Perhaps the lockup comes from the AV software locking these files while
the machine is trying to reboot. It's worth a look-see.

Re: WSUS Clients Hangs on reboot

Thanks Lawrence and Virulon

I'll will implement the recommendation of KB 822158
Interesting to see that the first things to exclude is the EDB file located
under "SoftwareDistribution".

Re: WSUS Clients Hangs on reboot

Hi Lawrence,

Just want to confirm to you that is is not our A/V software that is causing
the clients to hangs. We now run a script that turns off our A/V software 30
minutes before Automatic Updates initiate a restart... And we still continue
to have client hanging.

I've remotely ran the "handle.exe" command and no automatic update related
file were locked...

I've seen quite a few posts regarding the same issue recently... Is
Microsoft aware of this issue ? Any other suggestion that may helps ?

Thanks in advance

MS is only aware of the issue to the extent that every reported case (here,
at least) has been resolved as AV interference.

If you have an issue not related to AV software, I would suggest contacting
Support Services and reporting the issue as an "update failure" issue (which
should be a NO COST ticket).
