Some WSUS-Clients report 0x8024400E

Hi NG,

2 of 4 W2k Servers report error 0x8024400E in the UpdateService.log .
WSUS-Admin tells that these computers did not report yet for several days.

Reinstalling the Automatic Update Service had no success. This problem still
persists.

Other computers and servers in the domain (w2k and XP) work fine.

Any ideas how to fix this problem?

This one has been an issue for a while. Please do the following on the
problem W2K server and post the requested info back to this thread:

1. Stop the Automaitc Updates service.
2. Rename the %windir%\SoftwareUpdate folder to something like
SoftwareNonUpdate.
3. Rename the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log file to something like
WindowsNonUpdate.log
4. Restart the Automatic Updates service and wait 10 minutes.
5. Open a command prompt and issue 'wuauclt /detectnow' without the
quotes and wait 20 minutes.
6. Post the entire contents of the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log to this
newsgroup.

While you are waiting, download the Client Diagnostic Tool from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...s/default.mspx

That will help us out if additional troubleshooting is required.

Afaik, everything seems to be ok. DNS works fine and the WSUS-server is
reachable.

Any ideas what causes this tricky problem?

This is actually a server-side error, so attempting 'repair' at the client
will not do anything useful.

And, unfortunately, for the short term, there is no 'fix' available. It's
caused by a server-side database corruption issue, caused by a malfunction
in an XML import proc. Generally, it requires a reinstallation of WSUS (the
database and logs).

I would suggest obtaining the "Update Services API Samples and Tools" kit,
using the WsusMigrate tool to export your approvals. Uninstall WSUS, keeping
/only/ the content store. Reinstall WSUS, build a new database, set your
configuration options, sync (twice) obtaining all necessary metadata, then
reimport the approvals.

I had a similar problem with most XP clients reporting this error and not giving status reports. I eventually traced it to a problem with the AU client trying to go through our proxy server. Even though our proxy settings are set to bypass local addresses. I had to do the following to cure:

1. In group policy use FQDN for WSUS intranet server name i.e. http://WSUSserver.mydomain.com instead of http://WSUSserver

2. Ensure browser proxy settings includes *.mydomain.com in the "do not use proxy for addresses begining with" box. I used group policy to set the proxy settings globally.

I've had a similar problem and this update for the WSUS server helped in my
