    Error: Download Failed 0x80244019

Hello. WSUS is working beautifully except for some Office updates, such as Office 2003 SP2 update, Update for Access 2002, and Visio 2003 SP2. All of our workstations experience this same error, "Download Failed 0x80244019." The WindowsUpdate.log on the workstations also chows, "DtaStor WARNING: Update Service: Failed to update backup store". Below is a detailed excerpt of the WindowsUpdate.log. Thank for any thoughts that might help troubleshoot this!

    Hi

This error indicates that download failed since the content was not found at the expected location. Can you confirm that the content are all available as expected?

DnldMgr Failed job file: URL = http://update/Content/86/0D8295CECE912B4997A7A25E2BAECC4" DnldMgr Error 0x80244019 occurred while downloading update; notifying dependent calls."

The 0x80244019 error is an HTTP '404' error. It also appears that the URL being downloaded is an invalid filename. Perhaps you inadvertently deleted the characters ".EXE" when you were trimming the left-side columns. (Note: It would be preferable if you did not edit the logfiles when posting to obtain assistance. How do you know that you've not removed something that would be critical to identifying a cause and/or resolution?)

Most likely cause of EXE files not downloading is the installation of URLScan on the WSUS server, blocking the download of EXE files.

Second most likely cause is that the file was removed from the WSUS server after being downloaded. A client cannot download a file that has not first been downloaded by the WSUS server, so the presence of the log entry showing the attempted download is confirmation that the file did exist on the server at one time - it may still be there, but is being blocked by URLScan.

A quick check can be performed by attempting to access the given URL via IE. http://update/Content/86/0D8295CECE9...BAECC455DA.EXE

Also check the ~\WSUS\WSUSContent\DA folder to see if this file is physically present on the WSUS server.

The log file shows the file extension to be missing in the download URL. Can you confirm that your files are present (full files ) with extensions on the server the client is downloading from? Can you confirm the URL?
Also im assuming you've not previously patched an AIP for these clients?

On the client side, rename the Software Distribution folder, or on Server side configure the file location change.

Also check if you have the AV Panda titanium

I keep hearing about AIP. I will have to check the knowledgebase on this as I haven't a clue what these are. We installed from disk using an open license product key and then cloned workstations using Ghost and SysPrep.

    Hi Appy,

Thank you for your help! We have not used the lockdown tool. Other .exe and .cab files are successfully being downloaded to clients through WSUS. You were right about the file not being on the WSUS server although I can't say why it isn't there as I did not delete it. The really strange thing is the files appear to be available when I use IIS Manager and browse to the directory. The local path is shown in the properties window in IIS, but when I explore to the directory the file isn't there as you predicted. Now that you have helped identify the problem, I hope you can also help us remedy this. Where can I download these files? Hopefully I could just put them where IIS is expecting them and our problems would be resolved. Below is a list of the known missing files. Any idea how this might have happened and how we can avoid future problems like this?

    Re: Error: Download Failed 0x80244019

I downloaded the full file for these 3 missing updates but don't know how to extract the file I need. One other thought I had was to remove the files from the WSUS server through the GUI interface and then synchronize again to get the update but I don't see a way to delete an update through WSUS. I am reluctant to just delete the reference to the missing file in IIS since I think the WSUS DB would still be looking for it. I look forward to receiving any suggestions. Thanks

AIP = Admin Install Point. i.e. where the Office files are put when using setup /a

It does not sound like you are using one.

    Re: Error: Download Failed 0x80244019

To replace missing files from a WSUS content store, use the command: wsusutil reset which will generate BITS download requests for any files missing from the content store based on the current approvals stored in the metadata.
