| How to remove software downloaded from WSUS Server ?
I just install SQL Server 2008 on a Windows 2003 R2 Server. SQL Server 2008 SP1 is downloaded from the WSUS Server. However, SP1 is not installed successfully. In this way, every time I restart the server (after installation of SP1), the yellow button shows up in the system tray to remind me that SQL Server 2008 SP1 is ready to install. Finally, we install SQL Server 2008 SP1 by downloading the patch from MS and installed manually. However, to our surprise, Automatic Update still reminds us that SQL Server 2008 SP1 is ready to install. We would like to know is it necessary for us to remove the software downloaded ? If yes, does it mean by deleting all the stuff under %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download directory ? Thanks Patrick |

Automated installation of SQL Server service packs is always an invitation for problems. > In this way, every time I restart the server (after installation of SP1), > the yellow button shows up in the system tray to remind me that SQL Server > 2008 SP1 is ready to install. If it's downloaded, and not yet installed, this is a valid indication. > Finally, we install SQL Server 2008 SP1 by downloading the patch from MS > and installed manually. Why not just use the WUAgent User Interface and install the SP package already downloaded from WSUS <???>. This was the preferred solution to this situation. > However, to our surprise, Automatic Update still reminds us that SQL > Server 2008 SP1 is ready to install. Yep... you installed the update *manually*, therefore, the WUAgent has no event to report back to WSUS that says it has successfully installed the update. As far as it knows, the update is ready for installation and is not yet installed. > We would like to know is it necessary for us to remove the software > downloaded ? You could do that.. but it won't change how the WUAgent reports the situation. You installed the update outside of the scope of the WUAgent, so the WUAgent knows nothing about that installation. > If yes, does it mean by deleting all the stuff under > %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download directory ? No, you shouldn't mess with the contents of the Download directory unless you have to. Simply change the update to NOT APPROVED, let the WUAgent re-detect the status. The WUAgent will unschedule the installation, eventually delete the content from the download folder, and eventually update the status on the WSUS Server by reporting the update as "Installed/Not Applicable". -- Lawrence Garvin, M.S., MCITP:EA, MCDBA Principal/CTO, Onsite Technology Solutions, Houston, Texas Microsoft MVP - Software Distribution (2005-2009) MS WSUS Website: http://www.microsoft.com/wsus My Websites: http://www.onsitechsolutions.com; http://wsusinfo.onsitechsolutions.com My MVP Profile: http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pro...awrence.Garvin |
