| All clients "Not yet reported" status
Howdy, I have a newly installed WSUS 3.0 SP1 controlling about 50 servers. I have created group policies to manage the updates and all seemed fine. The clients showed up in their appropriate groups and updates are downloading nicely. The problem: NONE of my client computers are reporting their status. Every single one is giving me "Not yet reported" status. I have googled my hair out and now I'm here. I am sure there is something blaringly obvious that I'm missing, but I just can't see it. I have run the WSUS Client Diag Tool on one of my failing computers: WSUS Client Diagnostics Tool Checking Machine State Checking for admin rights to run tool . . . . . . . . . Ok, so I'm never going to be good at working for any national security firm. :) So. In regards to that error, the file is there. I'm not very concerned (yet) about that particular update. Do you think its failure is stopping servers from reporting their status? I wouldn't think so, but I am not the expert(in fact, probably the exact opposite) |

There's no indication in the logfile provided that the system ever initiated a call to ReportingWebService. Search that WindowsUpdate.log file from the bottom up for the first occurrence (from the end) of a call to ReportingWebService.asmx -- Lawrence Garvin, M.S., MCITP:EA, MCDBA Principal/CTO, Onsite Technology Solutions, Houston, Texas Microsoft MVP - Software Distribution (2005-2009) MS WSUS Website: http://www.microsoft.com/wsus My Websites: http://www.onsitechsolutions.com; http://wsusinfo.onsitechsolutions.com My MVP Profile: http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pro...awrence.Garvin |

And failing with an 0x80190194 error, which is an HTTP 404 error. Either the file has been deleted, after being successfully downloaded to the WSUS Server, or something is blocking access to the file and preventing its download by the WUAgent. ======================================================== -- Lawrence Garvin, M.S., MCITP:EA, MCDBA Principal/CTO, Onsite Technology Solutions, Houston, Texas Microsoft MVP - Software Distribution (2005-2009) MS WSUS Website: http://www.microsoft.com/wsus My Websites: http://www.onsitechsolutions.com; http://wsusinfo.onsitechsolutions.com My MVP Profile: http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pro...awrence.Garvin |

| Re: All clients "Not yet reported" status
I did some checking on this error. My server does allow for the traffic via firewall. I also read somewhere that I need to enable the mim-type for the "content" folder in IIS. This is done as well. What permissions does the content (and subsequent subfolders) require? What logs should I be looking at to find help with this? Thanks, - JayC |

Wow that was a very ill-worded/spelled post. No more 2am gaming sessions for me for a while... I read that I need to enable the mime-type for the .exe extension. I did this in the content folder, but I still seem to be having the problem. I am trying to find the right permissions needed for the "content" and subsequent subfolders, but am finding little information. What else could be stopping the file from downloading? The permissions are documented in the WSUS Operations Guide. > What logs should I be looking at to find help with this? Looking at the IIS logs might be useful, to see if we can get a more detailed idea of why the errors are being generated. The IIS Logs will give us the suberror (e.g. 404.x) code, that will tell us exactly why the URL is "not found". -- Lawrence Garvin, M.S., MCITP:EA, MCDBA Principal/CTO, Onsite Technology Solutions, Houston, Texas Microsoft MVP - Software Distribution (2005-2009) MS WSUS Website: http://www.microsoft.com/wsus My Websites: http://www.onsitechsolutions.com; http://wsusinfo.onsitechsolutions.com My MVP Profile: http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pro...awrence.Garvin |

Ok, according to the operations guide, all permissions are set correctly. The only entries in the last two days' logs with something other than a 200 code are: POST /ApiRemoting30/WebService.asmx - 80 - 165.91.18.149 Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+6.0;+MS+Web+Services+Client+Protocol+2.0.50727.42) 401 1 0 and GET /Content/6C/F0B6F18B73206980644E83D9037DCD881BDCE36C.exe - 80 - 165.91.18.149 Microsoft+BITS/6.6 404 2 1260 |

This is an Access Denied for somebody attempting to make a Remote Admin Console connection .. and failing. > GET /Content/6C/F0B6F18B73206980644E83D9037DCD881BDCE36C.exe - 80 - > 165.91.18.149 Microsoft+BITS/6.6 404 2 1260 This is the one we're looking for! http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/318380 The HTTP 404.2 error is "404.2 - Web service extension lockdown policy prevents this request." First possibility is that the ASP.NET v2.0 Web Service Extension is not Allowed. In IIS Manager, on the "Web Service Extensions" node, verify that "ASP.NET v2.0" is "Allowed". The other thing to confirm is that you do not have any 3rd party utilities running on the WSUS Server that might be blocking access to HTTP file transfers. -- Lawrence Garvin, M.S., MCITP:EA, MCDBA Principal/CTO, Onsite Technology Solutions, Houston, Texas Microsoft MVP - Software Distribution (2005-2009) MS WSUS Website: http://www.microsoft.com/wsus My Websites: http://www.onsitechsolutions.com; http://wsusinfo.onsitechsolutions.com My MVP Profile: http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pro...awrence.Garvin |
