hi,

strange thing happened a few weeks back

specs of server

windows 2003 se sp2 domain controller
wsus 3.0 not wsus 3.0 sp1

cannot start the windows internal database service

network service is logon account for update services and windows internal database service.

further info. i am unsure if this wsus 3.0 was installed and then dcpromod to a dc. would that cause this? oi do know that server is a dc. wating to hear back from the tech when wsus was installed. should i just remove it and reinstall it or will i need to remove iis first then reinstall iis then uninstall wsus and reinstall.

if i understand you correct all i need to do is uninstall wid and not IIS.

To uninstall Windows Internal Database
1. Open a command shell.
2. Call msiexec with the correct key for the operating system platform.
• On 32-bit platforms: msiexec /x {CEB5780F-1A70-44A9-850F-DE6C4F6AA8FB} callerid=ocsetup.exe
• On 64-bit platforms: msiexec /x {BDD79957-5801-4A2D-B09E-852E7FA64D01} callerid=ocsetup.exe
Important
The removal of the application may not remove the default .mdb and .ldb files, which will cause a subsequent WSUS 3.0 installation to fail. These files can be deleted from the %windir%\SYSMSI\SSEE directory.

Correct? do i also need to uninstall wsus 3.0 from add and remove programs and check the boxes it gives you as items to additionally uninstall.

Yes. In fact, you should uninstall WSUS 3.0 before performing the W.I.D.
uninstallation

was able to uninstall wsus 3.0 using reg key set to 0 from 1 for uninstall but cannot uninstall windows internal database

cannot of course install wsus 3.0 either

using command line to remove says fatal installation
windows internal database service still shows in services and is not started and cant be.

have not uninstalled iis

any thoughts?

i can start the service wid now.

i still cannot remove wid.

cant install wsus 3.0 either.

fails at setting internal settings for wid.

is there a solution to this? or should i just bail on this dc.

This has resolved my issue. wsus 3.0 installed and wid ok.





Try this from RegEdit:

1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
Edit the "InstalledInstances" value and remove "MICROSOFT##SSEE"

2) Remove the "MICROSOFT##SSEE" subkey under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server

3) Remove the "MSSQL.2005" subkey under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server

4) Rename the following folder:
\%Windir%\SYSMSI\SSEE\MSSQL.2005\MSSQL\Data to \%Windir%\SYSMSI\SSEE\MSSQL.2005\MSSQL\Data.old
