| Re: Printing to local XP machine from program on Server 2008
So just to be clear; you're connecting to the server through the Remote Desktop Connection Client? And you say you can't then print to your local printer. On your Remote Desktop client, to you have the option checked off for local printers? To do that, after you've double-clicked on the RDP client, click on the Options button, and then the Local Resources tab. Make sure Printers is check off. When you say "nothing works", does that mean you had already tried that? Yes, the print option is checked, yet it still will not work. |

Can you describe what you mean by "it will not work"? Do you get an error message? Does the print job appear to go to the printer, but never prints? After you've remoted into the server, does the printer show up in Printers and Faxes? If not, is it a USB printer? The print job goes directly to the queue, where it remains, and eventually reads an Error. Upon logging into the server, the printer does not show up in Printers and Faxes, yet we have tried multiple times to add it to the list of printers (using the ip and port #s). And no, this is not a USB printer, it is connected to a switch in my office, which connects to my computer and 2 others. Quote:

Hi Did you try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302361/en-us ? Normally when one uses the RDP client to remote into a server and Local Printers are being brought over, the printers that show up on the workstation's Printers and Faxes show up in Printer and Faxes in the RDP session. And of course, if they don't, then printing to that printer isn't even a a possibility, you can't print to what you can't choose. > The print job goes directly to the queue, where it remains, and > eventually reads an Error. It needs to be the same drive that your workstation uses. 2. Some USB Printers simply just will not work. With USB printers it is a "crap shoot" as to if it will work or not. In my experience the HP LaserJet 1505 (which is USB only) is one such example. My expeirience with the HP LaserJet 1300 & 1320, I had to physically carry the printer over to the Server, plug in the USB, let the plug-n-play install the printer in the normal way. Then I unplugged the printer,...deleted the printer (the driver always stays behind, deleting the printer does not delete the driver). Took the printer back to the user. The 1505 would not respond using this method (or any other method) and I eventually gave up on the 1505. I then found out how to add just a Driver to the OS without the printer present by using "File-->Server Properties" from the Printers and Faxes windows,...but it made no difference with the 1505. The 1505 would print fine locally from the server when attached directly to it, but would never properly redirect when the printer was local to the user. It is very possible that others here have had other better or worse experiences,..but those things are what I experienced. -- Phillip Windell www.wandtv.com The views expressed, are my own and not those of my employer, or Microsoft, or anyone else associated with me, including my cats. ----------------------------------------------------- |

A printer with a DOT4 interface is one of those multi-function devices..... printer/fax/scanner, etc. And they're always USB. He mentioned that it isn't USB. I'll have to try that later on that 1505 I had trouble with. I didn't know you could switch them to and LPT port,..I thought it would just quit working if you did that since the machine (typically now-a-days) doesn't have a "real" LPT. Is the registry entry mentioned go on the TS "server" or on the Client that is connecting? Is this entry not required if you switch to LPT,...I assume it is for when you can't or don't want to switch it to LPT. -- Phillip Windell www.wandtv.com The views expressed, are my own and not those of my employer, or Microsoft, or anyone else associated with me, including my cats. ----------------------------------------------------- |

John, I tried the link you sent, and the server now recognizes the printer, however it still sends the print to the queue, and then errors out. Let me reiterate, this is a network printer connected to a hub, it is the HP Laserjet 2550n. Do I need to install server 08 drivers for the printer on my XP machine? I didn't think I needed to do this, but should I? |

Ok, so it is a network printer (ethernet) not USB. I didn't send you that link, that was from ThePro. These were my last questions. It's difficult to help further without knowing that information: Normally when one uses the RDP client to remote into a server and Local Printers are being brought over, the printers that show up on the workstation's Printers and Faxes show up in Printer and Faxes in the RDP session. And of course, if they don't, then printing to that printer isn't even a a possibility, you can't print to what you can't choose. > The print job goes directly to the queue, where it remains, and > eventually reads an Error. Please read carefully the links before you reply. The title is "Printers That Use Ports That Do Not Begin With COM, LPT, or USB Are Not Redirected in a Remote Desktop or Terminal Services Session", so it applies to printers with ports that begins with IP. Hi, This registry modification does not switch the printer to LPT, it redirects it in the RDP session even though its port name does not begin with LPT, USB or COM. The registry hack is done on the client computer, and since it is in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive you must do it for each user on the machine. Hi, The statement below is right, but there is 2 things to keep in mind for the local printers to redirect in the RDP session: - The port name must begin by LPT, USB or COM (except if you apply KB302361) - The printer driver must exist on the Terminal Server. If it is not included in Windows, you must add it manually. If the driver is missing you will get an event 1111 in the server's system event log with the name of the missing driver.
