Avira AntiVir Personal Sucks

I had to reinstall Windows recently. For fun I thought I'd try a new
virus scanner instead of old reliable (avg). I decided to try Avira
AntiVir.

Here's a tip for people considering the same thing: don't bother!
Avira pesters you with popup ads harassing you to give them money,
every single day (everytime it updates). Big huge advertisement/popups
that claim to be from "Mr Hacker" - telling me I should buy Avira...
LOL.. I'm sooooo going to do that.... I LOVE POPS... I nearly ALWAYS
listen to them... especially ones from "mr hacker"! /sarcasm off

Great sales pitch, morons.

Enough is enough - stop nagging me Avira!!! You're so
annoying!!!! /uninstall

AVG > AVIRA

Tsk, tsk...

There are ways to stop the Pop-Up but...
The quality of Avira AntiVir is worth the "slight" annoyance.

Hint: Don't let "avnotify.exe" execute :-)

AntiVir Remove Nagscreen
http://www.elitekiller.com/files/dis...ntivir_nag.htm
or
Windows XP:
Boot into Safe Mode (tap F8 repeatedly after you restart the computer)
Log in using the Administrator account
Go to C:\Program Files\(Avira)\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe
Right-click avnotify.exe==> properties==> security==> advanced
Under the Permissions folder you will see all of the users. Start with the
first user¡K.
Edit==> Traverse Folder / Execute File==> deny==> OK
Now perform step 6 for all of the other users==> apply==> YES/OK==> close
all open windows
Reboot the computer into Normal Mode (start==> shutdown==> restart)
Good luck :)

I do not see the big deal about clicking one ok box, once a day, seeing
that I click countless OK boxes daily.

You are okay if every piece of software you runs pesters you with
popups? You're okay with popups that claim to be from "Mr Hacker" and
say stuff like "I read your email"? You put your trust in a company
like this?

Goodluck.

I'll stick with AVG, which I've used for 5+ years on three computers
(do the math guys: thats 5475 popups I didnt have to deal with?
Hmmmm... tough choice......).

I respect AVG and have purchased their "Pro" product on my small-
office machines because they have been so reliable with their freeware
versions on my home machines........ Avira has a lot to learn if they
seriously want to compete with AVG using "Mr Hacker" Popups..........
please..... it's pathetic.... AVG wins hands down......

blahblahblah.....

Explain WHY i would bother doing this when I can just get something
else that is LESS ANNOYING?

We've used AVG on 3+ computers for 5+ years here. These computers are
used heavily.... we download a large amount of 'questionable' 3rd
party executables.... AVG+Spybot+Windows Defender+updates+firewall
+router has protected us 110%......... 110%...... avg has stopped
HUNDREDS of viruses/emails/applets in that time.... ZERO have gotten
through.....

Here's the best part: no popups... and not having to boot into safe
mode to trick some inferior av product

You appear to have a zealots mindset.

I responded to you because you were posting something that I had a response
to. I don't care who you are, who you believe you are or if you are
mentally challenged. This is a newsgroup; Discussion on topics, getting
various opinions out there, posting experiences and assistance on the
matter and deciding on your own what you wish to believe/do/respond
to/ignore.
Enjoy it the way you desire - I made no 'debate challenge' - I only gave
you a couple of options to rid you of a perceived problem. If you took it
as something else - not my issue. Ignore the advice! And stop your childish
ranting and go on with your pitiful life.

I recently switched over to Avira on test machines here as well. The new
AVG isn't so reliable. :(

> Here's a tip for people considering the same thing: don't bother!

Why not? It seems to be a very friendly program, with an amusing GUI that
is actually newbie friendly.

> Avira pesters you with popup ads harassing you to give them money,

Ah well, it's free software, they'd like for you to support them by
buying the "full version" which doesn't do the advertising. Do you by
chance use msn chat client? If so, it too has ads that scroll across the
bottom of it's screen, and it's crash prone. :( I hate the software,
however one of my "jobs" requires that I use it.

Anyways, back to the point, the problem you seem to have is the
advertisements... So, just... *shrug* disable them? avnotify.exe, rename
it, remove it, do whatever you like to it, and those annoying
advertisements that bother you so much will go away.

> Great sales pitch, morons.

Well, they do require people to have a sense of humour; Obviously some
don't fit the criteria.

> Enough is enough - stop nagging me Avira!!! You're so

In the time it took you to post this rant, you could have googled about
your problem, and easily taken care of it. Likely with several minutes to
spare...

Re: Avira AntiVir Personal Sucks

jeez most of you using AVG should shut the f up and try running a scan with antivir and youll prove how dumb you are PERIOD. I can GUARANTEE it will find viruses that AVG missed. AVG is for grannys who only play pogo and barely venture off a google link. I personally know someone who writes anti-virus software and he says HANDS DOWN Anti-Vir is by far the BEST at finding viruses others dont, and actually deleting them completley. Dont beleive me, GOOD, pay some one to fix your PC when AVG fails. Just do yourself a favor and run a scan with Anti-Vir right now and your eyes will finally be open! The only problem is this program is not for NOOBS. AVG was made just for you NOOBS.
