| Wired lan stopped working after security update. I have a laptop that connects to my router wirelessly, it is Vista and has just done a security update and upgraded itself to IE8. The updates were KB969897, KB971930, KB963707 and IE8. My laptop still works fine and connects ok but my desktop (XP sp3) which connecs to the router with an ethernet cable won't connect. Could this be something to do with the update or just a coincidence? Thanks, Dave. |

Hello Dave: Bypass your router and connect your XP SP3 desktop directly to the WAN side if you're able. Please update this thread with your progress. Hi Pete, Thanks for the quick reply, You'll have to bear with me if I don't understand straight away. Do you mean to try to connect the desktop wirelessly? If you do I'm afraid it doesn't have wireless. Dave. If you have a separate DSL modem from your router, then you could temporarily eliminate your router and connect your desktop system directly to your DSL modem. However, if you have an integral modem/router that idea won't work. If you have tried powering everything off for at least 30 seconds, including your DSL modem, router and such, then reboot everything and you still have the trouble, then you may need to try backing the recent Microsoft updates out one at a time till the trouble is identified. Hi Pete and MowGreen, I think the modem and router are combined so I don't think I can eliminate the router. It is a Siemens Gigaset SE587 WLAN dsl if that helps. It's connected like this: phone line goes into the back of it and then I use the yellow cable from one of the yellow ports on the back to connect into the yellow port on the back of the desktop (hope that makes sense). On my XP desktop I just went into Network Connections and clicked on Repair in the Local Area Connection Status and it said it was trying to Renew IP Address but after a while said it couldn't do it. Also I can't access the router setup page from the XP dektop it just says page not found. (I can still get to it from this laptop OK) Sorry for the information overload but I thought if I give all the details it may be clearer what's going on. Thanks again, Dave. Nonsense - this was excellent information. You're doing well. > > Thanks again, > Dave. Hello Dave: Although an obscure connection probably does exist, I see no immediate reason why the updates and upgrade to IE8 would have done this. Of course some HDD corruption may have existed prior to your updates, none of what you did shows a clear path to loss of networking on your desktop. Assuming you have already done graceful power resets on everything and in the absence of other clues, it appears as if you should try a system restore from a date just before the trouble began. Do you have any full system backups prior to the failure? Regards, Pete -- 1PW @?6A62?FEH9:DE=6o2@=]4@> [r4o7t] |

Hi Pete, Yes I've tried turning everything off and re-booting but still no luck. I do have a quite recent backup so I will try that next and see what happens. Thanks, Dave. Shut down the computer Wait about 3 minutes then reconnect the battery and put the electrical plug back in Wait for all the lights to come on then turn on the computer and see if you have internet If not before you remove the security updates call your cable company to make sure it is NOT the modem. They will try to ping the modem to see if it is working. If they determine it is not the modem then you can try either uninstalling each update or do a system restore back before you did the updates. robin >> |

Hi all. Finally had chance to have another look at this. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network card but nothing. I then tried uninstalling the symantec firewall that was on the PC when I got it and that worked! Everything is back as it was. I don't know why that would have suddenly been a problem when it had all been working fine up until now? Oh well. Thanks for all your help anyway. Dave.
