    plug in your desktop speakers to the same jack and see if you get sound from both channels.

    some power supplies have a thermal sensor circuit in them that is read by the system. Not sure about dell.
    That could be the thermal event you are seeing.
    You didn't say you cleaned the supply?...

    do you have another hard drive to try to install xp to?
    It sounds like a hard drive issue that should be ruled out.
    If you have/can borrow an other hdd, try to install xp and see if error appears...

    download memtest86,....burn it as bootable cd,....bios set to boot from cd,.....put cd in and restart.
    memtest will start and run tests. I would let run at least an hour.
    If no errors, can 95% rule...
