Could someone explain why Sercurity Essentials must be reactivated each time after I shut down the laptop overnight?

I'm running XP edition 3

I don't fully understand this instruction? I did two things:

1) I hit the "search" button and typed in "services.msc". It brought up two items that I explored, but found no "defender" wording
