James Bond: Quantum of Solace (xbox 360 & PS3 preview)

James Bond: Quantum of Solace is the upcoming game based on Ian Fleming's iconic British spy, who's been around since 1953. The character has appeared in 14 novels and 22 films over the past few decades. The special agent has even starred in an array of games published by everyone from Nintendo to EA since 1983. The latest publisher to try its hand at the multitalented spy is Activision, which has tapped internal studio Treyarch to craft a new action game based on the most recent Bond films starring Daniel Craig

Its the latest Edition of James Bond game series & its the first edition

The newest Bond game in the well-traveled history of the franchise will be held up to the same standards, perhaps unfairly. Ok, unfairly. James Bond: Quantum of Solace is the first Bond game on the current generation of consoles. Wait, what? Really? I thought a Bond game came out once a year. Oh, it just feels like that? My bad. It’s also the first game to feature the “new Bond”, Daniel Craig. If you haven’t seen it, I won’t spoil anything for you, but Casino Royale is a pretty bad-ass movie. He’s a very different kind of Bond than Remington Steele was. And that’s good.

    The story

Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M interrogate Mr White who reveals the organization which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined.

On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world's most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano. Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.

Daniel Craig donning the dapper tuxedo.

First things first: Quantum Of Solace is actually a first-person shooter based on the Call of Duty 4 engine, with the development handled by CoD3 developers Treyarch. There are differences, though - although the scripted sequences remain, there are third-person elements designed to remind you that you're actually 'being' Bond.

Whenever 007 takes cover - the system's similar to the one in GTA - the camera pulls out to show where he is, relative to his attackers. You'll also see the third-person perspective crop up in more action-packed sequences - whenever Bond needs to creep along a ledge, balance on a beam or clamber up a ladder. Finally, you'll also be able to pull off takedowns - currently done by God of War-style quick-time events - where Bond strangles, punches or pistol-whips enemies to a silent demise

Daniel Craig may be the toughest Bond of all time because he is bring the heat

    It begins

First It was the Venice House stage for a general game overview. Those that have seen Casino Royale will remember this chase through a sinking house in Venice. This section did a good job showing off the basics of gameplay, including the 3rd person mechanics (tap a button to quickly sprint between cover), sneaking up on enemies to silently shoot them and stay hidden, and destructible thin walls that can be shot apart to reveal new paths.

The game will feature a mix of stealth action and plenty of gunplay.

This area also answered a big question I had been pondering: How do you make an action game about a hero that doesn't get into shootouts all that often? The answer is in the atmosphere. The environment in Venice felt alive, adding to the cinematic feel. The light was trickling through windows and cracks in the roof. The house slowly sank, creaking and groaning as the floor began tilting this way and that. Cans rolled back and forth at Bond's feet as the house slowly crumbled and flooded. Even with only a handful of direct confrontations, the tension was palpable

Expect to play through scenarios from the new Bond movie, as well as 2006's Casino Royale.

The title's varied game play. Set in the casino from its respective movie, the second level allowed Bond to take a more stealthy approach. Guards were scattered throughout the floor and sneaking allowed Bond to use one of two options: a quick head shot kill or a take down. Take downs work in a fashion similar to those in the recent Bourne Conspiracy - you trigger them with a button press and this starts a QTE. Should you hit the right button, a custom animation plays. In our demo, Bond flipped several guards over a balcony, sending them plummeting to the street. The balcony served another purpose - it illustrated a stealth mechanic. Bond can carefully shimmy along ledges to avoid certain rooms. So that players don't miss what's happening inside the room, the screen splits in half - on the top, a series of picture-in-picture panels display what the bad guys are up to, while keeping Bond on the lower half, so the player isn't completely taken out of the moment. The level also featured a lock-hack mini-game where Bond timed button presses to disengage a lock.

The action can get quite intense.

In fact, the game's got almost everything: but has it got a Metal Gear-style torture minigame based on that ‘classic’ plum-whipping scene?Give credit to Activision’s own Call of Duty 4 engine. We know it to be a robust one graphically, and obviously well-tuned for first person shooter action. Add to that the full co-operation of the producers of the movie – meaning that the game not only features the real voices and likenesses of the central players like Daniel Craig and Dame Judy Dench, but also full access to the production of the new movie

    summary

Quantum of Solace is a core first-person shooter video game developed by Treyarch and produced by Activision, due out for the Playstation 3 and XBox 360 consoles in Fall 2008. The game makes liberal use of the first-person perspective with third-person play interspersed throughout for particular action sequences (such as the construction site parkour chase scene at the beginning of Casino Royale). The game will contain content derived from both the 2006 film Casino Royale and the 2008 film Quantum of Solace, and will be the first video game to feature the talents of the most recent James Bond, Daniel Craig.

Chase scenes add tension without having to rely on simple shooting.
