Ninja Gaiden 2 (Xbox 360)

Ninja Gaiden 2 makes its long-awaited debut on Xbox 360

It is a blockbuster action-packed sequel to Ninja Gaiden. Ninja Gaiden 2 features a new and improved game engine, developed from the ground up exclusively for Microsoft and Xbox 360 by Team Ninja and legendary game developer Tomonobu Itagaki, creator of the famed Dead or Alive
This is one of the best, most challenging action adventure games ever made.

The sequel to the blockbuster action game by Tecmo's heralded Team Ninja. Gamers must guide Ryu Hayabusa on a mission to avenge his clan and prevent the destruction of the human race. Armed with an assortment of ninja weaponry, players must help Ryu skillfully maneuver through a world fraught with peril and danger. Running on an entirely new gameplay engine, Ninja Gaiden 2 evolves the action in the sequel with an auto-generation health system, new enemies and locales, and thrilling combat built upon an extensive assortment of ninja weaponry. With Ninja Gaiden II, what you see is what you get. It's a frantic, skill-based brawler, and retains the responsive mechanics that set the first game apart. It's all about quick action and quicker reaction, a careful balance of parry and thrust and total coincidence. Only the most dedicated players will dominate at the highest difficulty, as it should be.

Ninja Gaiden II has to be one of the bloodiest games ever made. Brains will be roughly coaxed from skulls, launched into walls with a sickening smack. Limbs will litter the ground by the dozen. Ryu may have a fancywalk-on-water move, but he'll be wading through more pools of blood than anything else. You really have to admire a game that leaves you feeling empty if you leave an enemy with a single appendage still attached. It's over the top, but deliciously so.The premise of the game is similar to the original NES classic, though the storyline is completely self-contained, so no previous experience is expected from you. When Ryu Hayabusa's village is attacked and the evil Dark Dragon Blade is stolen from its centuries-old resting place, the young master ninja brandishes his family's legendary Dragon Sword and sets off on the trail of the villains responsible. While the story gradually unfolds through some spectacular cutscenes, it never really takes center stage, so you'll spend most of the game just wondering who these mysterious villains really are.

Slow weapons have no place in Ninja Gaiden II. Even the massive Eclipse Scythe moves in streaks and flashes. The faster weapons like the Tonfas and Kusari-gama are a blur as you rack up massive combos. It begins simply. There are two buttons for attack, a fast and a strong move. Hold down the strong attack and you can absorb karma (most projectiles can be charged now, too) from dead enemies and unleash a devastating ultimate technique. Learning how to string the two attacks together and perform combos allows you to dish out death with vengeance and will surely win the affection of any love interest watching you play. It's just plain sexy.

Ninja Gaiden is difficult. Make no mistake about it. There are no weak enemies to be found, and you'll usually face several of them at once, or else you'll face one very tough (usually very large) boss opponent of some sort. Pattern recognition alone won't get you through this game, since most enemies don't follow obvious patterns in the first place, which means you'll need good reflexes and clever tactics besides. None of the fighting is unfair.

The combat is the star of Ninja Gaiden 2 once you get the hang of it. All the old weapons and combos from the original are back in full force. Thanks to improvements enemy behavior and physics, it’s so much more satisfying to splatter a guy’s skull all over the ceiling as you execute a flying attack that decapitates enemies You can criticize the best action movies for their bad camera work and tepid storylines, but those elements ultimately take little away from the experience. The same is true with Ninja Gaiden II.

Ninja Gaiden II is easily one of the best action games on Xbox 360. The depth in combat is as exciting as ever and the new gameplay additions and changes only add to the experience. The game has been focused from its predecessor into a more pure action affair, for better or for worse, but the formula remains the same -- frustrating camera and all.
It's challenging and rewarding.
