    Split Second: Velocity

    Introduction:

Already at the origin of the great Pure in 2008, Disney is back on the market arcade racing game. This time, no question of quad, no question either reuse a concept to make it more fun, the hour is innovation. Split / Second: Velocity is probably not revolutionary, but you will discover a new way to experience racing cars. And nothing that's huge. The game is unanimous and is proving to be one of the great surprises of the year. So naturally, the announcement of a new title arouses interest, if not enthusiasm. With Split / Second Velocity, the studio is poised to repeat the same shot.

    About the Game:

Split / Second Velocity is an arcade racing game oriented to practice on PC and consoles. From the developers' own admission, Split / Second Velocity resemble a TV series based on street racing, which we have entrusted the directing to Michael Bay. Players in Split/Second don't just collide with other vehicles to knock them from the track, they can also trigger devastating events that drastically alter the dynamics of the race. Players must use pinpoint timing to obliterate huge structures and towering TV set pieces to tactically alter the track or create entirely new routes. Selected as the Best Racing Game from Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 2009.

    Key Features:
    • The City Is Your Weapon - Trigger explosive, devastating events lined throughout the track that drastically alter the dynamics of the race
    • Every Lap Is Different - Use pinpoint timing to obliterate huge structures and towering TV set pieces to tactically alter the track or create entirely new routes
    • Auto Evolution - Your playing style dictates how your vehicle evolves over the season
    • Intense Multiplayer ? Compete in a variety of game modes in 2-player split screen or take the action online in races for up to 8 players

    Gameplay:

The completion of the game relies on a higher bid because of explosions and accidents of all kinds to which the director of Armageddon has accustomed us. The peculiarity of Split / Second and Velocity based on interaction with the scenery. The latter, in perpetual change, proves to be as much a weapon as a threat. Specifically, it has a gauge that can initiate, like a QTE (Quick Time Event), attacks "scripted" symbolized by blue or red icons. These attacks can take various forms but always appear more dramatic if your gauge is completely filled. And each time, the goal is the same, embarrass the opponent as possible to take first place.

The blur around to stick a big impression of speed, spectacular explosions repeatedly, hyper-brutal accidents that deform the plates with a non-concealed pleasure and a minimalist interface to let the player enjoy the view. It works! The frantic all can dive without too much difficulty in these races unreal, while the game engine, almost flawless, the show provides. No major technical hitches regrettable therefore, a visual identity that tears and a sense of staging particularly catchy. From this point of view, Split / Second takes the bet.

With Split / Second: Velocity, arcade racing game enters a new era. No, this is not the principle of television commentary by an awful voice that won us over but the end misuse of the principle of power-ups made by developers. Here, no weapon, no turbo, no shield. In reality, the player has not shipped any ammunition in his chest, often from a redesign at the existing model into reality. And yet, the races will be as explosive in a few games in the genre, the sets will suffer from a war without thank you among the eight furious race and body will bend repeatedly in crashes that are reminiscent of those Burnout. How? Simply using scripts acting on the sets on the line and the various shortcuts to find. The originality of the thing is that these scripts are triggered by the players in person! And then we no longer refers to Burnout but rather Stuntman, Split / Second posing as a hybrid of these two great games.

    Re: Split Second: Velocity

    Variety is the rendezvous:

The evolutionary design and layout of circuits show a good work from Black Rock Studio. Every explosion, every landslide of rocks, each crane ready to hit the road, everything has been carefully placed to provide sensation based not only on the side explosive utterance, but also on the reflexes of the player where everything plays sometimes just fractions of a second (split second, in English). Sensations which also operate well beyond the first part, which suggests that the game should not tire too quickly. Instead, they come back with pleasure on a regular basis. A fun game that also comes from the line, very arcade without the car physics is provided ones (we feel the differences between a heavy model and another lighter ).

In addition, the grip wants immediate. This is not unlike that of a Ridge Racer (the design of cars also evokes the game by Namco) and a burnout (for everything concerning the filling of the gauge base skids, jumps and aspirations). And then, Split / Second Velocity has the good sense to provide different modes of play classic addition to the race, we find a disposal method where the latter is ejected after a while, until nothing is left more than one participant.

A survival mode puts you on alone against the clock so that all external elements are unleashed to slow you down (probably the most exhilarating mode). We should also mention the attack on a helicopter where you must avoid missiles while achieving a better time. And its variant where you must remove the aircraft as quickly as possible by returning its attacks. Finally, there is another test of survival is to overcome the heavy weight, knowing that they swing the barrels blazing in a remake of Donkey Kong explosive road.

There are hundreds of scripts in Split / Second: Velocity. Elements of the set exploded, invade the road, suddenly a plane lands on the runway used for racing, drag cranes leave their dump on the hood of competitors, a helicopter carrying a bulldozer just crush gear against a bridge that starts at collapse, others leak oil cans, etc.. Soon, the chaos is winning the race, so that the final round has very little to do with the first player to slalom between the rubble and deal with reduced visibility, the lack of outbreaks that have developed As in countless destruction.

Suddenly, the dangers multiply until the finish line and the positions are really comfortable when it is crossed. Before that, expect to go through all the states even if it should be noted that AI has nothing to do with AI "Mario Kart". A series of crashes do not leave any chance to assert yourself when a flight without a hitch him, you will provide at least a podium. Like what, it is possible to link power-up clothing and justice, while being about balance.

If the player needs to chain slippage (a brake or release the accelerator is enough to send off your car, this drift more or less easily depending on its attributes) to drive up its power-up gauge , AI pass the turns without slipping but never left of "ammunition". Strange, especially since only the AI can turn normally safe to eat the track exiting corners. In other words, the player loses cornering all the time he won in a straight line by taking advantage of the phenomenon of aspiration which is deliberately exaggerated.

Here, no need to stand within ten feet of a car to gain a little speed, just that it is on your path within 200 meters to recover not only a little suction but especially for to inflate the famous power-up gauge. The third and last method of feeding is to take advantage of lower asset platform (ship's hold, a piece of road collapsed ...) to skip the long and impressive as possible. Drag, draw, jump and you will have every opportunity to interact with the scenery, as many times as you portions of power-ups available, that is to say, three maximum.

In this connection, the player is not forced to use these parts individually. He may choose to balance both, which allows him to trigger a monumental script, hitting a tower, boat, bridge or whatever is most heavily in urban layout. It is rare that a classic script you will not find more than two or three circuit but it acts directly on the line, the opportunity for us to appreciate the careful staging by the developers of the game and all this in real time. For example, a skyscraper could collapse on the runway, closing access to open a new one, offering players a unique portion of the road they had not practiced before the event.

Here we discover that the circuits have many different sections, which mitigates the disappointment with the low number of plots by default and most importantly, repetitive environments. Because if they impress with their dynamism, their finesse (despite aliasing) and the multitude of details that drive them, we must admit they do not vary much throughout the season mode. A mode yet rich with more than 70 events vying for episode six races.

    Re: Split Second: Velocity

    It's bigger, it's good!

One can imagine such a development would require an action worthy of the enormous logistical biggest blockbusters of Hollywood cinema (and again). It is probably for this why the title of Black Rock Studio turns funnier in its proposal to place the player into a true dream (TV) audience. For if one begins to drop a few bombs to helicopters stationed around the circuit, soon, things will take a disproportionate amount deliciously. These include, the less impressive than impressive, bus burning exploding on the side of the road to block your path, a dump truck caught on a helicopter that has literally destroy a tunnel before crashing into a beauty, but also ship to shore that stands to come along and take the dock and all competitors in its path.

These mass destruction are not only a consequence of putting a spoke in the wheels of opponents, they can also have a direct influence on the layout of circuits. Thus, when a bridge worthy of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco comes to crumble after the initiation of an action or a huge tower crashed onto the road, this completely affects the trajectory of the race and makes laps more unpredictable (at least in the early parts). To this we must add the ability to unlock shortcuts by using a portion of its gauge of attack. The ideal is to take a spinning competitor to benefit from the momentary opening of the shortcut and conserve energy and to eliminate it. Class.

Each episode consists of different tests, all successfully validate the concept of power-ups and unrealized helping to make the game extremely dramatic. In addition to the classic races where eight racers compete, we are entitled to test the profiles more or less different. If the elimination races are a classic, those of survival, said detonator or Air Attack are more original. In Survival, the player is alone against a series of semi-trailers letting out barrels of oil. The blue barrels explode but without directly damaging his car, the red them, remove a life meter of the player who receives three.

    Blur accused:

If Split / Second Velocity can claim to be the most fun game of the year, it still lacks some extra circuitry to vary a little pleasure. Finally, there is a two player mode in split screen and online multiplayer mode (playable up to eight) downright exciting. The latter offers more challenge the best possible (solo, the AI lacks a bit of aggression). In our version, not totally definitive, there were also some (rare) crash bugs and sudden disappearances of textures. But nothing serious as the title makes up with detailed environments and beautifully modeled. Above all, the principal is there, namely, an arcade racing game pleasurable, with good impressions of speed combined with a barrage of explosions.

The goal is to successfully pass a truck than knowing that the barrels are increasing and that after a while, all are likely to crash your box. Detonator mode, always alone against the clock, players must survive the automatic release of all the scripts in a circuit. In short, he must survive the Apocalypse avoiding each of these scripts. An excellent knowledge of layout and its hazards is essential not to finish a pulp. Finally, Air Attack mode, a helicopter with rockets balance of the points of impact are identified before they arrive, it is therefore a question of avoiding them as long as possible. Three variants for three other ways to take pleasure in Split / Second. A real success.

    Re: Split Second: Velocity

    Conclusion:

Split / Second: Velocity is a great surprise and proves the ability of Disney to win in a radically different kind of Pure. If it can be regarded as a clever mixture of Burnout and Stuntman, S / S is primarily a title of a new genus, incredibly dramatic and ultimately, much more subtle than it appears. If the AI can still be improved, if we deplore the small number of circuits, it quickly fell under the spell of this racing game extremely nervous. Finally, the big plus Split / Second, it undoubtedly can replay races without it ever happens the same things at the same time. And just for that, he needed as a reference on PS3 and 360.
