AVG Internet Security 8.5

Introduction to AVG Internet Security 8.5

AVG. Yes, what should I do now about that in an introduction. The company was founded in 1991, Intel has a large stake in the company and some 80 million people use the free virus scanner from the company. If the business you say something vague, then you will you still thick false positive recall of AVG a while ago. Anyway, I honestly have little experience with the AVG products because the virus scanner of this business a long time was nothing special. He was free, but there was also a bit of all.

But it seems that the virus has improved. At least the paid version. The free version, although it is benefiting from the improved virus and spyware detection, but still has some shortcomings. If it does not detect rootkits, updates less often scattered and lacks a few other (smaller) options.

Last year the company came with version 8.0 of its security suite and the suite was recently updated to version 8.5, which is the version in the spotlight will be taken. The first looks at how the installation process and the first impression of the package.

Re: AVG Internet Security 8.5

Installation & interface of AVG Internet Security 8.5

The installation of AVG Internet Security 8.5 is about ten minutes. At least, that's the whole installation process and that includes the download procedure prior to the installation, which is required because of the AVG website download a 748KB file size then the real suite is available for download.

After completing the installation configuration wizard. This wizard can be set up scheduled scans, data can be delivered to AVG for virus infections, the AVG toolbar for Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer, and the first update can be performed.

This wizard is also complete, then the PC again are launched. After startup is that AVG only 20 MB of internal memory eat. This is reasonable enough. However, it adds a lot to the boot time of about 20 seconds.

Further examine the performance of the PC with AVG, in measuring how long it takes for a mp4 file to convert, then, that this speed is close to the speed without AVG. It added a second half and that is almost nothing. During a computer scan, however, were 15 seconds more. Good results.

Interface of AVG Internet Security 8.5

The main window of AVG Internet Security 8.5 is fresh and above all simple to. And that is good. It is simply built with three tabs left and the top few menu options. The rest of the room is filled with 12 icons each for their own part of the suite are. Also in this area the status of each part indicated.

If you click on one of the twelve icons, then the detailed status of that component as well as information about what exactly and where it was last updated. The firewall is also the profile on the PC application.

The left tabs it is possible to scan the computer or an update. After an update on the updated components each briefly closed to the Windows Security Center and AVG itself, warning that the components are disabled. This can be very annoying, because there is such a regular balloon from the Security Center.

AVG is one of the few anti virus providers somewhat Windows-compliance with guidelines in interface design, because there is a real menu available. From this bar can help part be achieved, as well as advanced settings.

And the institutions of AVG are pretty sophisticated and go far beyond simply on or off a particular part. Sometimes the settings up to four levels deep, as is the case with the antispam component. But for the average user are the optimal performance settings automatically.

Re: AVG Internet Security 8.5

Antivirus & Firewall of AVG Internet Security 8.5

The part of AVG antivirus, the last three VB100% awards and is certified by ICSA Labs for only malware detection. West Coast Labs certify it for both AVG malware detection and malware removal. Moreover, the West Coast Labs for a plume to excel in the detection of Trojan horses.

AV-Test, the assessment Very good spyware detection, virus detection and Good Average for malware removal. In AV-Comparatives is just another story. In the latest test AVG did an Advanced + rating, while at the proactive detection (finding unknown malware), only a Standard score managed to get. Anyway, the virus is certainly not bad.

In the not so serious event that you download malware from the web that detected by AVG, the file before you can start harmless and a message appear in the middle of the screen indicating that malware is downloaded.

There is only told that a threat is detected, it is not clear what the threat was made. Is this yet? State-ie in quarantine? What happened to AVG? Pretty important information.

The AVG scan speed is initially good. He did exactly four minutes on the test drive over to where all virus scanners. This is one of the fastest scores, but AVG scans all standard types of files. If that option set, then scored the suddenly much worse, and takes a scan of the same drive ten minutes.

Planning scans is very extensive. Planning can range from every hour, every day, every day of another month or by booting the PC. It is also possible scan settings extended to, for example, whether there should be scanned at root kits, or a heuristic method must be used and so on. Of course, the scanning locations are given.

Firewall

The firewall is a bit less up I'm afraid. The bad news is that a lot of firewall alerts because there is no database of good and bad programs are present. Each displays a message asking whether a particular program may connect to the Internet. There are three options: Allow, Allow Safe and Lock. It is also possible to have a standing rule to save, which is not always the same question is repeated.

The option Allow Security may confuse. It is unclear exactly where this option makes. It appears that it ensures, not thanks to the help file, the program also has access to the networks marked as safe in AVG.

Anyway, the scores improved firewall in leak tests? No, unfortunately not. The firewall itself gets in test which 62 samples were used only a score of six percent. AVG let myself know that its firewall is not designed for a stand-alone environment, but rather as integrated endpoint security solution.

Antispam & more

Because the suite has no parental control, on this page only the antispam component and other components discussed.

Antispam

The antispam integrates with mail clients. Instead, you have to set rules for mail via POP3 with [SPAM] in the title automatically be redirected to a specific folder. Also, no tool will be included, for example, you can mark certain messages as spam or not spam, as do many spam filters. Yet the institutions of the anti quite deep. It is in the AVG settings window can import address books, to train the spam filter, black and white lists, and extensive set up filters.

This spam filter is not one of the user-friendly. But he gets the filtering for each other? To determine I had the spam filter process 3000 messages which are about 300 spam mails. In total, some 10 percent of legitimate mail in the spam, while less than five percent spam in the inbox was. These are good results.

Link Scanner

The Link Scanner is one of the 'extras' in the suite. This program is similar to McAfee SiteAdvisor: the check websites or not safe. Link Scanner is from Exploit Prevention Labs where AVG a while ago the decision was.

In addition, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer, the two browsers that Link Scanner supports a toolbar that is not useful. This toolbar can the Active Surf-Shield and Search-Shield on and off. Also, the AVG status info is given and there is advertising for Yahoo! at.

But because there is no indication whether the current site is safe or not, this is no more nonsensical than surreptitious for Yahoo!. In addition to the toolbar in English. Exploits are also blocked in the browser by the Web Shield.

AVG Identity Protection

New in version 8.5 is a separate component AVG Identity Protection. This product, also sold separately, it seems very much like Norton AntiBot and also the same. On the basis of the behavior of applications in real time trying to identify programs that are targeted to your identity.

On the Advanced tab, all active processes, as well as a risk indicator that shows how dangerous the process is possible. It is then possible to stop a process, to allow or quarantine them. The program is only available in English.

System Programs

New AVG Internet Security 8.5 is the section called System Programs. This is a collection of tools that current network connections, running processes, browser extensions, and more appear. Very handy for power users.

Re: AVG Internet Security 8.5

Conclusion

AVG Internet Security 8.5 gives you a mixed feeling. On the one hand, a good virus scanner and spam filter, both are very effective and know their job well to do. But on the other hand, the firewall again thanks to the many moderate messages and the user of the program is not you, although that version 8.5 is slightly improved with a new interface.

However, there are quite a few problems in that area. Some reports are unclear, the help file in English, the spam filter is horrible in terms of use and the names of some help even if not. However, this again means that the suite in institutions is very extensive.

Plus Points
  • Good malware protection.
  • Effective spam filter.
  • Little impact on performance.
  • Link Scanner & Identity Protection.

Downsides
  • No parental supervision.
  • Not user friendly.
  • Excessive firewall.
  • Only for power users.
  • Yahoo! Search engine.

Re: AVG Internet Security 8.5

AVG deleted a program that is important. How do I get it back or prevent this happening again.

Also, these forums are not the most posting friendly.

thanks.

Re: AVG Internet Security 8.5

In general, whenever any anti-virus software finds an infection on a file or folder, it doesn't deletes it completely from the computer. Instead, it will first move it to Quarantine folder and it stays there until user manually removes it from there. So first check if it is present in your AVG quarantine folder and if you are sure it is virus-free then restore it from there.
