What I would like to know is are these printers good for printing photographs, especially SLR quality?

Yes this printer is having the ability to print the photos easily. You can take the Print out of Pics easily. You can also go with the Samsung CLP-300 Colour Laser Printer which is also a printer that prints the photo with high quality. So if you can then go any one of these and see whether you are getting the proper photo or not.
