Automatic Updates Won't Turn On
I am following the below process and get Error 1058 saying Could Not start
the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer. The service cannot be
started, either because its disabled or because it has no enabled devices
associated with it.
"The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is
not running:
Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install
high-priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more
quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with
troubleshooting, if needed)
To make sure these services are running:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click
Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.
6. In the list of services, double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) and then click Properties.
7. In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply.
8. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.
9. In the list of services, double-click on Event Log and then click
Properties.
10. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
11. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button.

I am having the same problem.. I got my services open but when I get to step
3. "In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click
Properties." I don't have anything listed as Automatic Updates but I do have
the BITS and it is set right, but my event log dont let me start or stop it.
I tried reinstalling the autoupdate service from some instructions I found
on a google search, but it didnt work either.. Any suggestions?

You cannot manually start the Automatic Updates service and you receive an
"Error 1058" error message on a computer that is running Windows XP or

unable to open windows update
I have the same problem and would certainly be interested in what must be done to fix it. . My update files and security files are jeopardized by a virus, I believe, (identified as Vista Anti-virus). This came from (blush) a nasty site. I have tried everything to open the automatic updates and something keeps interferring and disabling before it can start . I believe that if I can get these updates to open, the virus problem will be fixed also.

I do not know if I missed something or not, but it sounds like you do not
have a virus scaner installed. if you you do, run a scan on your computer.
If not you can get a free one from AVG. Next try the Microsoft update. It
does the same thing as windows update plus other things. It may work even if
windows update doesn't. If that doesn't work go th windows update help and
leave a e-mail to them. they will answer you.

Start by stating your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1).
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
PS: It's services.msc, not services.msn.

I had the same problem and finally found someone from Microsoft who helped
solve it!
Suggestion 1: Scan for Spyware
=======================
This step can help us scan and clear spyware.
1. Please download super-antispyware from the following site to the desktop.

Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a
company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or
otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.
2. After downloading it, please double-click the downloaded file to install
it.
3. After installing it, please launch it to scan and clear spyware.
The first time I did this I came up with MANY problems. I ran it a second
time and it came up with a couple more. And THEN I ran it a THIRD time, from
SAFE MODE.
1. To get to Safe Mode, restart your computer. As soon as the computer
begins the restart, tap on F8 repeatedly until a screen comes up that you can
select "Safe Mode". Use the arrow keys to arrow up to Safe Mode and hit
enter.
2. Once the desktop is loaded in Safe Mode, I had to search my computer for
the SUPERantispyware program. It did not load automatically in Safe Mode.
Go to Start Menu, then Search, select All Files and Folders, type in
SUPERantispyware, select Search.
3. In Safe Mode, SUPERantispyware identified one more Trojan and once it
removed that I restarted in normal mode.
At this point I was able to turn on Automatic Updates. I then went to
Windows update and downloaded a bunch of updates that needed to be reloaded.
I had to run through the Windows Update portion about 3 times before I
retrieved all of them. My computer seems to be working fine now.
