Shrinking Partitiion? Trying to Delete Pagefile.sys
I want to shrink my "C" partition with disk manager but it will not let me
make it small enough because of the pagefile.sys file which I want to
delete. How can I shrink the partition since I cannot seem to be able to
delete pagefile.sys ? It says to also remove the shadow copies which I have
done. TIA
Re: Shrinking Partitiion? Trying to Delete Pagefile.sys
If your page file is keeping you from shrinking the partition, then
you probably need a larger hard drive.
If you have more than one, you can move the page file to the other
one.
To remove or delete (nor recommended) the page file, go to Control
Panel (classic view),
System
Advanced System Settings (left panel)
Settings
Advanced tab
You will find the page file configuration area there
Re: Shrinking Partitiion? Trying to Delete Pagefile.sys
You need to kill the page file. You can't when it is in use which it
always is once you're booted into Windows. So...
Control Panel, System. Advanced system settings on left then
Performance, Settings, Advanced tab, and then, Virtual memory, click
Change. Somewhere there should a checkbox for no Paging File. Check
that, then reboot, then finally you should be able to do what you
want. When you're finished repeat the steps to reset the Paging File.
Running without one will make your system extremely sluggish.
Re: Shrinking Partitiion? Trying to Delete Pagefile.sys
Hi David,
You can't delete the pagefile.sys (virtual memory) while it's in use, and
it's probably got immovable blocks of space locked on the drive. You would
have to disable virtual memory in the advanced system settings, and this is
not recommended unless you have plenty of memory.
