Can't start Automatic Updates on my computer
I got a pop up stating I am at risk because I don't have automatic updates
installed. I hit the pop up and selected for automatic updates and i got a
failure asking me to go to control panel to update the System Automatic
Update settings.
I do so and the shield turns to green but I still can't get into Windows
Update. On that site, I follow the steps to service manager and set Automatic
Updates to Automatic but it continues to refresh to disabled. I then make
tweaks to BiC something and set it to automatic but still it does not allow
me to start the service.
In conjunction, I keep getting a screen saver going to blue with a block in
the center of the screen that states I should download a program to remove
viruses as my computer is infected. I can't change the settings and even
though I shift delete the bacground image it shows up at restart and this
keep happing endlessly.

RE: Can't start Automatic Updates on my computer
I am having the same exact issue. It looks viral but when I search, there are
no virus' found. I also went into services.msc and tried to reset the auto
updates there, and no matter what I do it keeps turning "Automatic" to
"Disabled". I did check to be certain that background intelligence is
running, as are my event logs. In the event logs, i see an issue Dcom, which
I'm assuming is the same issue in a different message, in case thats
pertinent. In addition, I am getting all of the same pop ups as listed in the
original post here.
Help ;-)

RE: Can't start Automatic Updates on my computer
I down loaded a program mentioned on one of these threads that cleaned my
registry and I did find some viruses using spy-bot (freeware). I had to
manually delee 2 programs by hitting start - start up and looking for any
programs that i could not identify and that stopped the changes to the
background, etc.
I posted a online note to MSFT for assistance with not being able to start
Automatic Updates.
PS - I can start the BIC with no issues and checked that logging was
automatic. I still am unable to start the automatic updates and am having a
lot of issues with pop ups or all kinds....

RE: Can't start Automatic Updates on my computer
This has happened to me too, started yesterday on my laptop which had been
fine using AVG free edition.
Whatever I tried couldn't change 'disabled' status of automatic downloads,
laptop is 20 or more times slower than normal, AVG now has 13 viruses in
Virus Vault, multiple pop-ups and WinFix (I think) telling me to Scan Now!
Finally this morning (while investigating Antivirus Suites) lost taskbar and
nothing works, just have my screensaver picture and nothing else.
My daughter uses Bebo and msn a lot so I assume one of those is the culprit.
I think it's a visit to the PC repair shop for me :(

RE: Can't start Automatic Updates on my computer
Hopefully, I have good news for everyone afflicted with this. I found a cure
that worked for me.
In my case, it turned out to be a trojan by the name of Troj vitriumd, or
something similiar to that.
The only software i found that could locate it and then fixed it is Prevx
CSI:
http://soft.softoogle.com/ap/p7029.shtml
Once I followed all of the directions to the letter, not only did the
annoying pop ups stop, but I was able to turn on automatic updates and update
all of my Microsoft programs.
I was so greatful as my last resort was going to be flattening the system
and rebuilding it. CIS isnt free, it cost 19.95, but that's nothing compared
to the time and work I would have expended rebuilding my entire system.
I hope this helps you, too.
