WD My Book Essential Edition not recognized by XP
I am running Windows XP and I have been using a WD My Book Essential Edition hard drive for 6-7 months no issues. When I went to use the computer this morning then the drive was not recognized. I have unplugged, restarted and done many things but still it will not work. XP is able to recognize that a USB device has been connected but not that kind. Has anyone got any suggestions? Thanks.

Can you go to Start and then Run and then type Devmgmt.msc > highlight the usb root hub devices > action menu > uninstall > and then action menu > "Scan for hardware changes" to find the device drivers again automatically.
Re: WD My Book Essential Edition not recognized by XP
Thanks for responding, I have tried that and Windows only recognizes a Usb device. It doesnt seem to know what kind of device it is, so in device manager it shows a question mark under other devices subbed as a usb device. The usb icon in the tray doesnt appear when the drive is plugged in.
I have this same issue on two of my customer's XP systems with a My Book
I found that part of the issue is with the WD software. Try removing their programs from your system and then unplug the drive and reboot the computer. Once that's completed. Ensure that the blue light on the "my book" is not rotating. If it is then power cycle the external unit. Once this status light is steady then plug in the USB cable and see if that helps resolve the issue.
