"unable to create the file" "the system cannot find the file specified"
hi *,
after an update of our server (Windows Server 2003, 3 updates of at
least the past 3 weeks) we can't create files from remote any more.
bizarre is that
- it is possible to copy files from c: to \\server\folder
- it is possible to create folders at \\server\folder
- it is possible to copy files from \\server\folder to \\server\folder
- it is possible to edit files at \\server\folder
- it is possible to "echo test>\\server\folder\test.txt"
but as soon as for example MS-Access tries to create its lock file, this
fails. Right click in a folder, create file whatsoever.doesn'tmatter
results in "unable to create the file ... the system cannot find the
file specified"
....
day two now and we still can't write to those shares.
Removing all 8 updates we installed yesterday didn't help.
Dell support suggested to look into the "Security Policy".
Meanwhile we experienced indeterministic occurrences of the error
meaning that about every 2nd try to create a file succeeds what in my
eyes means it has nothing to do with security policies and must be some bug.
Greetings,
LW

The permissions are probably incorrect. Make sure the user has Read, Write,
Execute, Delete, Change permissions on the folder where the backend DB is
located and Read, Write, Execute, Change on the MDB itself.
Also don't use mapped drive letter notation in any shortcuts. Better to use
UNC explicit path calling executable and full qualified MDB path as
argument.

Hi
Thanx for the quick reply.

Again like in m.p.w.file_system my request was misinterpreted as an
MS-Access-issue. It is not! I get problems in many cases where I want
to create files one of which is the Access case.
Also it is very unlikely to me it is an issue of the folder rights as
this happens only every 2nd try. And very surprisingly this is not a
long time average but sometimes I get streaks of does/does not work over
10 tries.
As far as I can tell, the Avira virus scan is disabled now, too.

Well then consider my response only in the case of the Access issue. Since
multi-posting is generally counter productive this I'll drop off of this
thread.
