Are you asking about the Palces Bar, if so then read the article on "How to customize the My Places bar in the 'Open' and 'Save As' dialog boxes in Office XP programs" from the below link

I just searched on MS KB and found this article, which does give the needed information

The important step seems to be using the Tools dropdown in the toolbar (top right) to find the Add to Places Bar command - a typically unintuitive MS thing to do; why it couldn't be in the shortcut menu, or somewhere more obvious only MS can explain...
Thats strange about what Microsoft does. As you said, only they can explain it. Anyways, thanks for that link.
