Icons slow to fill on desktop
When my desktop is loaded after boot the icons have place fillers and it
take several monutes for the permanent icons to fill the screen. Also from
time to time when I load the control panel I get the searching flashlight
for awhile before the icons appear.
Any ideas and/or advice is certainly appreciated.
Win XP SP2,Celeron 700 mhz,512 MB memory.
Re: Icons slow to fill on desktop
Your system isnt fully loaded until these items are 'available'
Slow boot can be caused by numerous issues, not least memory, cpu, start up
apps, AV/Security, low disk space, malaware, drivers, etc

Have you looked in event viewer ?
Re: Icons slow to fill on desktop
I ran the event viewer and found a non-related problem and fixed it but no
problem found related to my icons.
At boot my HD runs for an extended period, can't see an obvious reason and
have tried to selectively kill processes, this only causes other problems.
Any utilities around that will read my unique config and optimize my
system? Can't think of any other solution.
A Google search of the problem brings up lots of others fixes but the ones I
tried will not decrease my boot time, load my icons faster or limit the HD
run time.

Re: Icons slow to fill on desktop
Utilities to optimise are often good ways to kill your sys
Open msconfig, disable all startups, reboot, accept the selective startup
dialogue, and retest
If still slow, open msconfig, hide all MS Services, disable the rest, reboot
etc
And your system Memory / cpu / free hd space is?

A quick thing to try - change your desktop color depth from 32 bit to 16
bit, apply changes and then change it back again. (Display properties /
Settings / Color quality). This should cause it to rebuild the icon cache,
and sometimes this fixes slow loading of the desktop icons.
Re: Icons slow to fill on desktop
Changing the desktop color depth and changing back seemed to fix the
problem.Win XP still loads slower than I would like but the icons fill the
page immediately.
Many thanks to all who helped.
