delayed write failed
I have read all knowledge base articles for my problems, and cannot find a
solution. I have a Western Digital 40GB HD that produces a "Windows - Delayed
Write Failed" balloon. I can get this message just by surfing the internet.
It doesn't matter which browser I use, I get the message.
I've scanned for viruses, I have run the diagnostic software from Western
Digital, I've checked for spy-ware and malware, and I've defragged the hd.
The problem with defrag, is I have to restart the computer to get it to run,
and then it stops at 98%. I've tried to check for errors, but chkdsk wont run
at startup.
Could my hd be failing? Have I missed something?

Re: delayed write failed
You could try changing the policy for that drive to quick removal,
and see of you get some other diagnostic.
drive / properties / hardware / (reselect drive again) / properties / policies

RE: delayed write failed
Delayed Write Failed -Windows Error Open System, Hardware, Device Manager, On
the HDD, Properties, advanced TAB, uncheck "Write Cache" Reboot
The chkdsk error is something more than a delayed write failure. I would try
temporarily turning Off the Virtual Memory and trying a chkdsk. If possible,
run it from a Recovery Console Prompt. (chkdsk /r)

This option is grayed out!

RE: delayed write failed
When I got home. I turned my computer on, and chkdsk ran. Chkdsk showed that
it was checking for consistency. This has happened before, just right after
the "Delayed Write Failed". After chkdsk runs and finishes, there are no
"DWF" balloons, and then after a few minutes or a couple of days, it starts
back up. Right now the balloon isn't coming up. I did turn off "Virtual
Memory" to see if that helps. I will let you know in the next couple of days
if it has disappeared or if it returns.

RE: delayed write failed
Well, today I've ran the computer for a couple of hours, and no "delayed
write failed" balloon! But, I still can't defrag or manual run chkdsk. I
think I'm going to just go ahead and upgrade to a larger hd. At least I'll
have more space. I found a 320gb hd for $80 at walmart. Everywhere else it's
$30 to $40 more, and it's a WD hd.
I disabled the "virtual memory", but, if I immediately go back to reset it,
it reverts back to my previous setting. I'm guessing that setting the
"virtual memory" was not what disabled the balloon. However, when chkdsk ran
last night--not me telling it to run, mind you--the balloon has stopped for
now! Not sure if this will last, but, when it comes back, that will be the
time I will purchase the larger hd.
Thanks for the help! If you have any further comments please let me know!
