Me too! It failed to install.
My notebook PC has Microsoft.Net 3.0 installed on top of 2.0 and 1.1 (as an
upgrade).
Today I saw two security update for 2.0 and 1.1 service pack 1 show on
Windows Update critical list.
So I downloaded and install them. Both installation fail. Why? Can some
friend and expert here help please!
Do I need to install them, and how? What are the problems I experienced?
These are the two updates that failed to install
.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 SYSTEM.WEB.DLL and MSCOREE.DLL Security
Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP,Windows 2003 x64/IA64
.NET Framework 2.0 SYSTEM.WEB.DLL and MSCOREE.DLL Security Update for
Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP

I got the same unexplained "update failed" type error. Followed this advice
and got to a more detailed problem description, but it still fails because
I'm not clear on what to do.

Download the KB928366 security update file directly from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
and install it."
==========================
That got me to this point when I clicked on that link and ran it:
'Please wait while Windows configures .NET Framework 1.1.'
Then another dialog box pops up in front of it:
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is
unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the
installation package 'netfx.msi' in the box below."
Use source:
C:\SWSETUP\AllDotNet\DotNet\US
Obviously I have to cancel because I have no idea where this is. Then I get:
"Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft .NET
Framework 1.1. The Windows installer cannot continue.
OK"
I thought that this was the reason that Microsoft created the Windows Update
service in the first place -- it's worked well, until now. The idea is
supposed to be that if you keep up with the updates, everything installs.
Now, we are seeing that the process requires all sorts of troubleshooting and
user intervention. Meanwhile, I will try to get this mysterious netfx.msi.
If it's not one thing, it's another!

do you have the Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1
dotnetfx.exe extract the files using a zip program to dotnetfx folder
and then run the update again. when it asks for netfx.msi direct it to
the dotnetfx folder the update will then continue to install.
Neither Kb928365 or KB92366 are working for me. Is this more BS from MS?
look in the newsgroup for George's
SOLUTION to the .net "failed to install" update

I also got this problem for updates from Microsoft got a workaround on
the internet.
Download from
KB928366
http://rapidshare.com/files/42491444...-x86_20112ef50...
also i found two more files which are not downloading.
KB928365
http://rapidshare.com/files/42491488..._3715c8e057f1f...
kb890830
http://rapidshare.com/files/42491438...1.31_a1ba1dc0d...
hashes are included in the file name to check for authenticity of the
updates..
I solved the problem. I turned it off. There is too much effort to fix MS errors. What are they paying these people for?
I totally uninstalled version 1.1 and version 2.0, then started over (I had to reinstall because Quicken and other programs required that these be on the system). All the updates worked on the reinstall including KB928366
i also had problems installing kb928366, so i said the heck with it. as long as my computer works without any problems that is good enough for me. i know that sounds cavalier, but i have always been somewhat of a contrarian.
