Installing Windows XP on HP Pavilion dv6000
Greetings,
I have some problems with installing Windows XP Professional on my
brand new HP Pavilion dv6000 computer. Most of the installation runs
without problems, but shortly before it completes I get the following
error message:
"An error occurred loading C:\Program Files\Common Files\System
\directdb.dll. The file may not have been installed or it has been
corrupted."
After clicking on "ok", I get the next error:
"An error occurred loading C:\Program Files\Common Files\System
\wab32.dll. The file may not have been installed or it has been
corrupted."
After clicking on "ok" again I get the last error message:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe is not a valid
Wn32 application."
After clicking on "ok", the installations completes seemingly withouth
further troubles. But the result is a "half-baked" Windows, whith no
network or internet connections, several functions does not work, and
a couple of programs can not be installed. I have tried to remove
Windows and installing it again, tried to repair the existing
installation, tried to install System pack 2, but nothing has helped.
Anybody has an idea what can be wrong?
Thanks,
George

Your winxp cd is damaged in someway maybe?
Was this PC supplied with Vista preinstalled? After a successfull winxp
installation you would need to visit HP site to download winxp drivers,
assuming they exist.
Further if supplied with Vista you may find your warranty / support
nullified

Same problem, no solution
As soon as bought my HP dv6000 immediately proceeded to reformat the HD and load XP. I just don't like Vista.
The installation worked, however none of the external ports - including networking - are working. Fortunately I have a reliable (Dell) desktop so can still access the internet. However the HP support site does not appear to have the device drivers required.
I can't believe they would sell a notebook without providing a recovery CD/DVD, so didn't even bother to ask the question. Can only blame myself. Now I have notebook that is perfect for everything except accessing the internet. - Rich

You sure your HP doesnt have a hidden recovery section?
Vendors are obliged to supply some means of recovering your installation,
either examine the docs that came with the PC, look at HP online help, or
phone HP (BTW dont tell them you installed WinXP)

Try www.bootdisk.com for a boot disk that will enable you to either format
or overwite the drive, or similar
