Unable to Update Windows Defender Definitions
I have tried to update my Window Defender Definitions and have been
unable to do so. I have tried updating from Windows Defender and recieved
error code 0x80070643. I then tried doing so from Windows Update on Windows
Vista Ultamate and recieved error code 80070714. The update wouldn't download
from Windows Defender Update and did from Windows Vista Ultimate Update
Extras. It created a restore point but would not install. I didn't find any
documentation at MS online for either of these error codes as of 4/19/07.
Between the two attempts PC Tools Spyware Doctor removed a cookie. I do not
depend on Windows Defender to protect my PC. I have McAfee Security Center
installed on the computer as well as the Spydoctor. If you can help me with
this issue it would be most helpful if you could give me the source for these
error codes.
Thanks.
Re: Unable to Update Windows Defender Definitions
If you click on this link http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, are you taken
to Microsoft Update website or Windows Update website?

Re: Unable to Update Windows Defender Definitions
I have the same problem and when I click that link I get the Microsoft Update
site - NOT windows update. What does that mean?

Re: Unable to Update Windows Defender Definitions
Try changing your default from Microsoft Update to Windows Update and seeing
if the problem persists: Go to Microsoft Update > Click on Change Settings
in left pane > Scroll to bottom of page > To Stop Using Microsoft Update >
Disable Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only
(check).
NB: With Windows Update as your default, you will need to check in at Office
Update to keep your Office applications fully patched:

Re: Unable to Update Windows Defender Definitions
I'm getting the same error code but am using Windows Update and not Microsoft
update. Also have the same combination of McAffee and Spyware Doctor. Could
this be an error being caused by these two programmes running together?

Re: Unable to Update Windows Defender Definitions
Same problem here, but I'm using Spyware doctor and AVIRA.
By reading this I came to the conclusion to temporarily close Spy doctor and
that worked.
just my 2 cents
Good luck
