C000021A unknown hard error
dear all,
I am using WinXP pro /sp2 and automatic update enabled.
Yesterday, my pc suddently can't load to login screen, after xp logo and the
running status bar, blue screen show with
"C000021A unknown hard error" is shown in the top left corner of the screen.
I try to use the winxp cd to repair, it can load the login screen again even
can login and work fine but become winxp pro with sp1 and without all the
updates. Then I update to sp2, it said fail during upgrade. but after
reboot, winver show me is winxp pro with sp2, then I keep update, it require
me to update about 63 items, after updated and reboot, the blue screen come
again with the same error message.
what can i do ??? i have no other spare parts to find out which hardware has
error, I try to install the winxp again in a new harddisk, i work fine
before update, but after update, required reboot but the pc enter a loop, it
reboot and reboot, can't load the login screen again. it seem is not the
harddisk error.
please give me some advice to solve this. thanks you very much ^_^

Sounds like you're having exactly the same problem I am.
You need to boot your machine using the Windows XP CD and select the
Recovery Console option.
When you get to the C:\WINDOWS prompt you'll need to type:
cd $NtUninstallKB925902$\spuninst
batch spuninst.txt
This will undo the KB925902 update and copy the original files back.
Next, make sure the machine hasn't got a live network connection to stop it
going and reinstalling the update.
Type 'exit' at the recovery console prompt and hopefully it will reboot.
You can then go to Control Panel and switch of Automatic Updates for now.
Also, go to Add/Remove Programs, click the 'Show Updates' box at the top and
remove the KB925902 update completely. Then you can restore your network
connection.
This is only a temporary fix as you still don't have this security update
and will have to check for subsequent updates manually, but it worked for me
- hope it gets you going again.

I will try later....cause I didn't install any update now....
but I check the new harddisk(which use I said before) in safe mode, I can't
find K925902 ....
so, what happen to the new harddisk ??? I just install the winxp sp1, then
mother board driver(sound, lan, chipset), then automatic update....however,
after reboot, it reboot, reboot and reboot again ............. may be beside
K925902, there are some other update which cause this problem....what happen
to microsoft.......help

I had the same issues, To finally get the update installed (after getting
your computer back to where it'll come up and get on the internet), I
manually downloaded the update (KB925902) from MS, saved it to my hard drive,
then restarted the computer in Safe Mode (F8 during the boot). Then Start
Button -> Run, and Browse to the saved update file and run it.
Once this was done everything was back to normal.

I had the same issues, To finally get the update installed (after getting
your computer back to where it'll come up and get on the internet), I
manually downloaded the update (KB925902) from MS, saved it to my hard drive,
then restarted the computer in Safe Mode (F8 during the boot). Then Start
Button -> Run, and Browse to the saved update file and run it.
Once this was done everything was back to normal.

Thanks, jrutz. I've just tried your suggestion and I now have a PC with
KB925902 installed which still boots! I can only assume that, with the PC
running 'normally', some process was stopping the update installing properly
and causing the subsequent boot failure. Booting in Safe Mode has,
presumably, allowed the update to go in properly and prevent the problem.
I also run AVG Free and that seems fine, although I did install the
additional Realtek HD Audio hotfix as advised on the AVG website.
Hooray, now I can get on with my Easter holiday.
