Unable to admin a folder; access denied
I have a folder in a Windows 2003 server's shared directory that was in use
previously. We are now unable to open the folder, we receive the error
message that Access is Denied - even with the server admin account.
Right clicking the folder for properties only shows a General and Customize
tab.
I've tried to push the ownership and permissions down from the parent
directory but still get Access Denied when trying to push those permissions.
I've tried to use CACLS but receive an error that the folder cant be found.
I've tried XCACLS.vbs but also receive an error that the folder cant be
found. (oddly enough I am able to auto complete the name for that command
using tab and the folder is visible when doing DIR)
This shared drive is 1.7 TB in size so doing a scan disk would take forever,
not to mention that this shared drive is in use for at least 16 hours a day,
and is in use for approximately 36 hours on the weekend for a full backup.
Are there any suggestions for other methods to reclaim this folder? Our
ultimate goal is to delete the folder and any contents.
RE: Unable to admin a folder; access denied
I am running into a similar problem, a pair of folders in a share that for
whatever reason, lost inherited permissions, and are now inaccessible. I've
tried cacls, xcacls, subinacl.exe, and fileacl.exe, all with no effect.
Forcing permission changes and taking ownership doesn't seem to work.
My next attempt will be to reboot in safemode and try to take ownership, but
the folders are on a production server so I need to schedule downtime.
I also wonder if un-sharing the parent folder for a while will affect
anything.
