Event ID 8032 Browser service fails to retrieve backup list
This is single DC small office LAN running W2K3 server as the DC. I had a
second server running Win2000 server that was also configured as a DC, but I
just demoted this to member server. Since the demotion, the Win2000 server
is writing the system event log every two hours with this error: The browser
service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{94C57B8C-4970-401B-A6E2-DF3ABF02A935}. The backup
browser is stopping.
How do I stop this error from occurring? Thanks.
Re: Event ID 8032 Browser service fails to retrieve backup list
You may want to use browstat to check the master browser status. Or disable the windows 2000 as master browser. these search results may help,

Re: Event ID 8032 Browser service fails to retrieve backup list
Thanks for this, Robert. I ran browstat and saw that the DC is the master browser, and then there are two other Win2K3 servers that are acting as backup browsers. So I decided to disable the Win2000 server as a browser backup.

how do I disable win 2003 as browser backup?
Re: Event ID 8032 Browser service fails to retrieve backup list
we have 4 Windows 2003 Standard Servers...one which is the PDC, another that has Exchange 2003 running and I believe is a backup browser (how would i verify). On one of the other servers I continue to receive the following in the event viewer.. Message: The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{22B1DC3C-DEE5-4720-B0F4-5782DCBBDD2A}. The backup browser is stopping.
would using browstat provide me all the information that I need to know about the servers in regards to browsers/domain controllers etc.? What would be the best command to apply to gather as much information as needed?
Is there any known gui interface that microsoft provides that scans the network to provide this type of information?
appreciate your insight.

Re: Event ID 8032 Browser service fails to retrieve backup list
I ran browstat status on the Windows 2003 Server (BINGBANG) that is getting the 8032 errors and the results are below. Is it normal to list the master browser in the backup servers and is ok to use the Exchange Server (BACKDROP) as a backup server?
Status for domain WONDER on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{22B1DC3C-DEE5-4720-B0F4-5782DCBBDD2A}
Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: BADASS
Could not connect to registry, error = 53 Unable to determine build of browser master: 53
\\\\BADASS . Version:05.02 Flags: 284166f NT MASTER CONTROLLER
3 backup servers retrieved from master BADASS
\\BACKDROP
\\BADASS
\\BINGBANG
There are 3 servers in domain WONDER on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{22B1DC3C-DEE5-4720-B0F4-5782DCBBDD2A}
There are 0 domains in domain WONDER on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{22B1DC3C-DEE5-4720-B0F4-5782DCBBDD2A}
Re: Event ID 8032 Browser service fails to retrieve backup list
Hello 1006suntech,
It is normal that some other servers are listed as backup. You can also disable
the master browser service. See here for additional informations about:
