RE: Code 80072F76 update error
You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error
0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message when you
try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site

Make sure you haven’t got anything blocking Windows Update like Nortons,
Zonealarm etc
Also make sure you don’t have a Web Accelerator working in the background
such as NetZerio, HiSpeed, Speedband etc.

RE: Code 80072F76 update error
Respectfully sir, I think you didn't read her question right. In Windows
Vista you do not go the Microsoft Update Web site to update windows. Windows
Update is handled by the Operating System. I've tried everything they
mentioned in the KB article you quoted (which is for Windows XP and earlier)
and it hasn't solved this problem for me either.
I cannot update Windows Vista and always get the 80072F76 error. I also get
it when I try to download updates for Windows Defender.
Any ideas? I appreciate the help. I do not have any of the programs they
have installed that they say could possibly cause a problem.

RE: Code 80072F76 update error
Hello,
I too am experiencing the same error. I have tried everything in the MS KB
article with no resolution. Windows Defender also is not updatable.
I was able to manually download some Windows VISTA patches and fixes from the
microsoft download site, but none of these fixes have fixed this problem.

RE: Code 80072F76 update error
This error is very frustrating as I cannot update Windows, Norton, or Windows
defender. I hope someone will help us all and let us know what we can do to
correct the problem.

RE: Code 80072F76 update error
I was able to correct the problem I had. I was running Norton Internet
Security 2007 that came with my new computer. I installed another Internet
Security Suite from Bsafe that includes a content filter that I have been
using on my old computer. I updated the Norton Internet Security Suite to
the new version and I uninstalled the Bsafe security suite becasue I noticed
on their website they said their security suite is not 100% compatible with
Vista yet. I am now able to get updates for Norton as well as Windows.
There must have been a conflict by using both security suites at the same
time.
This may not be the same problem you are having but wanted to post what
helped correct the problem I was having.

RE: Code 80072F76 update error
I've read somewhere in all this discussion that you can fix this problem by
turning off the "accelerator" How do you do that? Please help.
