Tech55, you rock!!! Thanks so much for your post, I have tried everything and the Hitman 3.5 worked for me also, Windows Updates runs awesome now.
Re: Error number: 0x80072EFF
First of all make sure you are using Internet Explorer while visiting Microsoft Update Page. Many time the problem occurs due to the browser also. In addition, i would like to suggest you to visit the following threads that have been discussed on the same issue. Hope you will get some help from there:

Re: Error Number 0x80072EFF
You can also try the following
- click START, RUN and put the following command in
- regsvr32 /u msctf.dll
For me it ended up being something to do with the Microsoft Office speech tools. This reset it and now I can do updates.
As always, there may be multiple reasons for some of these benign Microsoft errors so the more options you have of correcting them the better off you will be. I will definitely keep the ones listed above in mind when I run into this again.
Re: Error Number 0x80072EFF
I had this problem on a client computer. Scanned for malware with many scanners, found none, but I was sure there was one there somewhere.
Downloaded and ran the hitman pro 3 thing mentioned above and activated the trial. It found a root kit, a problem with my MBR, and an internet proxy. Fixed them, re-booted and FIXED!! Windows update works again and my internet traffic has dropped to a normal level.
Now I will un-install Hitman.
Thanks!!
