Uninstall "Microsoft Update" and return to "Windows Update"
I just installed "Microsoft Update" which replaced "Windows Update".
It says the following at the Microsoft Update Site:
"Once installed, Microsoft Update replaces Windows Update. If you choose to
uninstall Microsoft Update, your system will revert back to Windows Update. "
Well that's just fine and dandy, but how do I uninstall Microsoft Update? I
don't see an uninstaller anywhere.
I am running an older version of Office and would prefer to have my old
Windows Update back which had an "Office Family" Tab that was easily
accessable.
Can someone help me out here?
Where is the uninstaller?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Uninstall "Microsoft Update" and return to "Windows Update"
Thanks Jim...I'm aware I can add the link to Office Updates to my favorites,
but that still doesn't explain the problem.
Why does Microsoft state that "If you choose to uninstall Microsoft Update",
it will revert back to Windows Update", yet they don't give you an option to
do that???
I really want to Uninstall Microsoft Update like they say you can.....but how?
Where is the option to do what they clearly say you CAN do if you wish?
Thanks again

Re: Uninstall "Microsoft Update" and return to "Windows Update"
Open Microsoft Update
On the left side, click "Change Settings"
Scroll down, the option to Stop Using Microsoft Update is at the bottom.

Re: Uninstall "Microsoft Update" and return to "Windows Update"
Thanks very much Jupiter Jones!
I can't believe I went there before, and never scrolled down below the
languages.
I see however that I'll really be "disabling" Microsoft Update rather than
actually uninstalling it. (In fact, I have two icons now at the top of my
start menu....one for Windows Update and one for Microsoft Update (both of
which bring me to the Microsoft Update Site at the moment).
If you'll allow me to be even more of a pest, how then would I reverse the
operation (in the event I ever wanted to), and go back to Microsoft Update
from Windows Update? (I was using V6 of Windows Update).
Is there a similar option in Windows Update or would I "download" the
axtive-x for Microsoft Update again?
Thanks so much for your help

Re: Uninstall "Microsoft Update" and return to "Windows Update"
I think you can toggle Microsoft Update back on similar to the way you
turned it off.
I know that it has been done, but I missed the details of how the person did
it.
As for the two links, mine both went to Microsoft Update.
I simply deleted the Windows Update icon.

Re: Uninstall "Microsoft Update" and return to "Windows Update"
Thank you once again
I've since experimented and found that after choosing to "stop using
Microsoft Update" in the manner you showed me, it does indeed automatically
remove the extra MS Update Icon, and also tells you that if you wish to
return to Microsoft Update at any time to simply "reinstall" it.
You have been most helpful!
Appreciate it!

Re: Uninstall "Microsoft Update" and return to "Windows Update"
I installed Microsoft Update on this Windows 2000 machine and it
displays an error: "The website has encountered a problem and cannot
display the page you are trying to view. Error number: 0x800700C1 "
The "Change Settings" line over on the left is grayed out and not
clickable. So how do I get back to using Windows Update? If I go to the
Windows Update page it's blank.
Re: Uninstall "Microsoft Update" and return to "Windows Update"
any luck Dave? I have similar prob:
I cannot get the new WIndows or Microsoft Update version 6 to work. It
downloads the updates but then when you say install, it fails every time! I
finally got the critical updates installed by going to shut down and
clicking on "Turn off AFTER the updates have been installed" option, which
keeps giving this message not to turn off or unplug the pc - it ewill turn
off automatically, which it did. When I rebooted, the critical updates had
been successfully applied/installed. BUT... the custom option will not
install any updates AND there is no way to turn off PC to have them
auto-installed. It just turns off the PC this time - probbaly becuz they are
optional. Anyone have any ideas how to go back to version 4 of
WU??????????????? I HATE this new version 6!!!

Re: Uninstall "Microsoft Update" and return to "Windows Update"
Hi,
Well I did that and yes the Icon was removed.
But if I click the old Windows Update Icon.
I still go to the "Microsoft Update" site.
I already did a reboot. So I'm just crazy
or does the "Microsoft Update" not uninstall from
my win2k Pro pc.
Greetings.

Re: Uninstall "Microsoft Update" and return to "Windows Update"
Hi Dave & Spudlette - Well, here's a possible workaround until you can get
v6 straightened out. Go to:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp After it's
finished checking and the "Find updates . . ." shows, click on "Windows
Update" on the left under See Also. This will take you to the normal v4
"Scan for updates" page for business as usual.

Re: Uninstall "Microsoft Update" and return to "Windows Update"
I'm still having trouble and I'm wondering if it's several symptoms of one
problem or several problems. At the MS Update page, I get [Error number:
0x800700C1]
* I'm not able to access "Change Settings" which is disabled on the page.
* MS XML 3 SP5 install fails and rolls changes back immediately.
* MS XML 4 SP2 is installed
* This is a Win2000 Server SP4
I'm not able to check for updates anymore. And several web pages aren't
working (OWA is the most serious)
How do I install XML3 SP5 or fix this issue?

Re: Uninstall "Microsoft Update" and return to "Windows Update"
Found the fix - installed all the other patches per the BITS/WUAU items. For
some reason it required the Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB824151). (No
reboot was required). Microsoft Update page works fine now as do OWA, GMail,
etc which previously were failing due to active scripting failures.
