New hard drive needed for a230n HP Pavilion Desktop
Hello friends, i have recently got the a230n HP Pavilion Desktop with Windows XP home edition installed, so can anyone tell me that which new hard drive will be the best and proper for the PC, it is second hand pc, during the time of purchasing i was told to get. So does anyone has idea which hard drive will be suitable for me, please help me. Thank you.
Re: New hard drive needed for a230n HP Pavilion Desktop
I have used same desktop which you have purchased, elt me tell you that for this hard drive you need to have PATA interface, which is necessary and if you are not aware of the hard drive then let me tell you that is having 120 GB Ultra DMA with 5400 rpm, so it will be easy for you to get a new one.
Re: New hard drive needed for a230n HP Pavilion Desktop
I would suggest that you are upgrading the Hard drive then also do replacement of CMOS battery, which will better and when you trying to take a new hard drive then you have to check the BIOS of your system which can support. I think that it is having Nvidia Nforce 2 chipset, so according with those specifications, BIOS can support ATA133 hard drives, maybe it support more than that. If you have Windows XP Service Pack 1 then you can get 137 GB hard drive, which is maximum for system. I would say that you go for 7,200 rpm hard drive as opposed to the 5,400 rpm version. To get IDE PATA hard drive is very tough and also not be possible to get.
Re: New hard drive needed for a230n HP Pavilion Desktop
If you are using Windows XP Sp1 then also you can get Hard drive larger than 137 GB. I used to work on a230n and when i was using it i was having 15 GB hard drive, not knowing the type of hard drive, i installed the Windows Xp, i was already having disc of it, it works great and better, but 15GB is been full. So you need to have larger size hard drive to work windows properly on it and you installed the latest service pack.
Re: New hard drive needed for a230n HP Pavilion Desktop
If you wanted to have Windows XP service pack then you will be use PATA/EIDE/ATA hard drive which will be best and better. If you are using it properly on the desktop then you upgrade the windows to service pack 2, and after some time you upgrade it to service pack 3. I also agree that it is really tough to get hard drive which is specified for this system. I am knowing some hard drive which are ATA133 with 5400RPM and ATA100 with 7200RPM, so look at list below.

Re: New hard drive needed for a230n HP Pavilion Desktop
I wanted to know that what is difference between PATA and ATA (133 and 100) hard drive, are they like operating system? I also know that MAXTOR hard drive are inexpensive and larger storage, but it will attack with serial connection or not?
Re: New hard drive needed for a230n HP Pavilion Desktop
If you have notice the pins of hard drive then, 40 pins hard drive were IDE, after then there were latest hard drive which were EIDE, PATA, and ATA, if you search on internet then you might get difference. The list which is been listed you can search on internet market and get. I would say that you go for Western Digital, it is best till now.
Re: New hard drive needed for a230n HP Pavilion Desktop
If you go to Wikipedia and search for Parallel ATA you might get information and will get difference between different type of hard drive. So your doubt will be clear and easy to get.
Re: New hard drive needed for a230n HP Pavilion Desktop
I liked the list which is been listed, all of are good quality. I would suggest that ATA100 7,200 rpm then going for 5,400 rpm. If you go for 7,200 rpm then you might be getting better performance in the comparison with 5,400 rpm versions. I do not know that which type hard drive is been supported on hard drive. In the market serial (sata) drives are new hard drives and these need that motherboard which are supported with it. If use IDE (ATA) drives then those are slower then serial (sata) drives, which not easily to get it, if also you get then you might get expensive.
Re: New hard drive needed for a230n HP Pavilion Desktop
I would suggest that "Western Digital Caviar Blue WD1600AAJB 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100 / ATA-6 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive" you will get for $89.99 and you will get 3 year warranty with purchasing, just search online.
Re: New hard drive needed for a230n HP Pavilion Desktop
You better take the SATA hard drive which will be better for you and which ever drives you go for is might be having Parallel ATA flat ribbon cable, so might get it and work.
